Music/sound effects

By Kager, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I like the idea of having music gently playing in the background durng my RPG sessions. What genre of music would you recommend playing for this RPG?

Also, i would like to find some sort of soundboard full of star wars sound effects for my sessions for extra flair, know where I can find this?

thanks for your time everyone!

If you can get a hold of the Star Wars soundtracks for the movies and/or the games, they'd be perfect :P

I'd also recommend checking out the Mass Effect and Battlestar Galactica soundtracks.

I guess it all depends on the mood you're trying to set with the music.

Gustov Holst. orchestral suite "The Planets". The "Mars" movement was the insperation for the imperial march. In fact, I had it playing while working at my FLGS and people thought it was a Movie soundtrack they could not place.'

Most any soundtrack with an original score works also.

Holst The Planets is an awesome album. Completely forgat about it till I read your post. Thanks.

I have musical "Stabs" (if you will) that I use between scenes, or during initiative. I have edited these out of the soundtrack. They are all extremely recognisable parts of the soundtrack… kind of hard to describe here…

For initiative for example, I have a small part of that "driving" String bit… but the trumpets drawn out over the top… kind of goes "dun dun du-du-dun…" over and over. My players know this cue… and they get ready to roll without even asking.

Also once a scene is over, I have a couple transition stabs… like the one in the movie when they switch to a scene at the death star that had has that sweeping strigs then dramatic Brass…bit… "Bum-Bum bum BUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMM".

I am not sure those hysterical attempts to describe made any sense. :-)

I've used "Duel of the Fates" for a few dramatic combat scenes. I figure its appropriate to try to make use of the ONLY good thing that came out of Ep I.

Overall, though, I really hate using music or sound effects in my games. It makes the players louder, which means I have to talk EVEN LOUDER to be heard, and at the end of the night, my voice is just shot.

I tried music in my old d20 game and it became a hinderence, mostly because of my slight OCD. I felt the need to hit the cues like it was a true film score and that is next to impossible to do in a tabletop setting. I also had a PC who played a droid and he used a type and talk robot voice app on his tablet. I enjoyed it but some of my other PCs thought it wa annoying

A couple friends of mine highly recommend this: http://www.bluefacegames.com/applications/dmdj/

…as a GM you can alter the mood of the music "real time" with what's going on on the game.

Some one seriously needs to do a sci-fi version of that ap!!!
