Identifying your own Bases/Models

By Failedhaiku, in X-Wing

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone had toyed around with finding a way to make your Bases/models identifiable. I know in other games like Heroclix and Monsterpocalypse you could get different colored plastic bases to help identify your own models. I doubt that is relly an option here becuase of how important the base sizes are, but what about coloring/painting the bases themselves?
I know this normaly will not be a problem, but it is possible for two players with similar TIE swarm lists to throw down against each other or even multi-player games where several copies of each named ship may come up.

use the numbers, and all numbers have 2 sides, a dark side and a light side

you shouldn't have any problems identifying your ships if you each use different colours

I tend to use the numbers to indicate Pilot Skill on the bases, but if an opponent does the same thing with the same faction then there could be a mix up.

However I have also weighted down all my bases and blacked out the thick card edges with a marker pen.

You would then get the issue with target and focus markers etc, I assume everyone just agrees to use one player's set?

Why? The pilot skill is already on the base, so i would not do that…

Interesting technique, I think I'm going to give this a try. In lists with mixed pilot skills I can see where this can be helpful in quickly assessing the order of movement/shooting.

Thanks!

Depending on the build, if I two or more generic pilots, I would also use the numbers. But, in general, I have the edges of each base marked using a colored Sharpie. I also use this method to identify my tokens, templates and asteroids -- even on the maneuver dials. As an additional "security" measure for the tokens and asteroids, I place tiny, round dots on one side of the tokens.

All of my ship bases have a magnet on them so they stay in my Star Wars metal lunch pail.

I am currently toying with different ways of marking my dials and templates.

Has anyone used a Sharpie to color the sides of the markers? I seem to recall that this moistens the card stock and causes it to seperate.

ONe player at our FLGS has painted the sides of all his bases purple.

I've used a fat red marker to colour the sides of all my cardboard bits -- ship tokens, templates, dials, asteroids, everything. No problems at all from any moistening.

I've also used markers to colour the numbers on all the movement templates. Since I provide the loaner gear for game days at the FLGS and demos at local cons -- I've used different colours for each set of templates and asteroids too. They look a lot sharper, and then it's easy making sure I put full sets back together at the end of the day. I'll post some pictures of these up on my blog soon.

I've also used markers to colour both sides of full sets of numbers. I have a blue set for Imperial, orange for Rebels, and green for Pirates. And I don't have to change my number chits cause they're always different colours than my opponent's ^,^

Go to arts and craft area and get some cheap beads that the shafts of the bases will pass through. In my area you get approx 1000 multi color plastic beads in 8 or 9 colors for 2 bucks. cheap and easy and you could mark squads for larger games and if need be you haven't marked anything up if you want to resale any unwanted ships.

Because the base is flat (so hard to read on the other side of the table) and upside down for at least one player. Since the stats are pretty much the same for a given ship model regardless of who is flying it, the PS is the only stat which it helps to see at a glance. Makes the activation phase very easy without squinting all over the playing surface to find the next PS.

Aside from special rules/upgrades, we barely need to glance at the pilot cards during the game except to take shields/place damage cards.

When we take multiple Academy TIEs these are alternatively marked with black "1s", another with white "1s", then "11s", "21s" and so on.

Looks much nicer with black edgeing on the bases rather than the bare cardboard edge. No disintegration of the cardboard so far…

Got the blog updated today. I'd taken a bunch of pictures earlier, and just had a chance to get teh final one done this morning that I wanted to include in the post. http://goblinhall.com/2013/05/21/personal-bits/
