Heroic Sacrifice and X-wing Escort

From the FAQ, pg 6

When a player wishes to play a card, take an action, or initiate an interrupt or reaction effect, he first declares his intent. The following steps are then observed, in order:
1) Check play restrictions: can the card be played, or the effect initiated, at this time?
2) Determine the cost (or costs, if multiple costs are required) to play the card or initiate the effect.
3) Apply any modifiers to the cost.
4) Pay the cost(s).
5) Choose target(s), if applicable.
6) The card is played, or the effect resolves.

------------------------------

This came up in a game today, and I wanted to check on the way I understand the interaction between these two cards:

X-Wing Escort is in play. The DS player has two vehicles, vehicle A and vehicle B. The LS player attempts to play Heroic Sacrifice.

My opponent believes that both of the vehicles are destroyed, claiming he can choose his target for Heroic Sacrifice after X-wing Escort resolves. I explain it in this manner (reference the FAQ):

1) There are no play restrictions; it is an action window and both players have at least one vehicle
2) The cost of the card is determined as 1 - its printed cost
3) No modifiers to the cost
4) The LS player uses 1 Rebel resource
5) The LS player targets his X-wing Escort and vehicle A
6) The effect of his action resolves and he sacrifices his escort and attempts to trigger its interrupt.

At this point I choose vehicle A, the same vehicle he has targeted with Heroic Sacrifice. This causes his Heroic Sacrifice to be cancelled, as there is no longer a valid target.

Did I get this right, or is the second target (the opponent's vehicle) chosen after the sacrifice of the LS vehicle is chosen?

OR

Is the sacrificing of the LS vehicle part of it's cost?

A well written question deserves a well written response, I hope I can manage.

4.1 of the FAQ indicates that Heroic Sacrifice is indeed a cost:

The word "to" as in "Do X to do Y" indicates that X is a cost that must be paid before Y can occur.

So, following the rest of the steps you already provided, the X-wing is lost(cost being paid) first.

1) There are no play restrictions; it is an action window and both players have at least one vehicle
2) The cost of the card is determined as 1 - its printed cost, and the X-wing
3) No modifiers to the cost
4) The LS player uses 1 Rebel resource and sacrifices the X-wing - interrupt triggers and opponent sacrifices vehicle A
5) The LS player no longer has any targets to choose
6) The card is played.

This explanation satisfies my curiosity and decent understanding of the rules. I hope it is right, I did not think of this scenario.

This was exactly the point of contention; is the sacrificing of your LS unit part of the cost?

My contention is that the only "cost" is the printed cost.

To the OP:

Short answer: Your opponent was correct.

Long answer: Sacrificing the Escort is definitely a cost of the action, as per the FAQ (as was pointed out by theChony in their post).

In the 6-step process of playing an action that you listed, the Interrupt on the Escort happens after step 4 (paying costs) but before step 5 (choosing targets). So you begin to play Heroic Sacrifice, you get to step 4 and pay all the costs (including blowing up the Escort) and then you pause there and resolve the effects of the Escort's interrupt, forcing the opponent to immediately destroy one of his vehicles.

After that, you go to step 5 of Heroic Sacrifice, choose a legal target. If there are any DS vehicles remaining in play that cost 4 or less, then it can be targeted and destroyed by Heroic Sacrifice. If the only remaining vehicle is something like Devastator or a Star Destroyer, the LS player is plain out of luck.

I agree with the answers above. This combo can take out 2 vehicles unless one of them is big enough to be immune to Heroic Sacrifice.

This is actually in the FAQ, your opponent is correct, but you could avoid both vehicles A and B being destroyed if one of your vehicles is cost 5 or more:

Page 7:
"If my opponent sacrifices his X-Wing Escort (Core 0164) using Heroic Sacrifice (Core 0047), which effect occurs first, the X-Wing’s Interrupt or the targeting of Heroic Sacrifice?
From the “Effect Resolution” section of the Advanced Timing rules above, you would pay the costs of Heroic Sacrifice, sacrificing a Vehicle, before you would chose the targets for the event. The X-Wing Escort’s Interrupt effect resolves at the time that the cost is paid, so it occurs before the target of Heroic Sacrifice is chosen. If your opponent sacrifices his only Vehicle of cost 4 or less to the X-Wing Escort’s ability, the remaining effect of Heroic Sacrifice no longer has a legal target and therefore does nothing."

We have always played it that it takes two vehicles out.

Thanks. I totally missed the EXACT reference! Sorry to the player who I bullied into my interpretation!

I just use Swindled or something similar to return the escort to my hand, so I can rinse and repeat as many times as possible/necessary.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

Let's say I play You're My Only Hope on the X-wing Escort and the only vehicule my opponent has in play is the Executor, undamaged, does he discard it since the Executor is not targeted by the escort?
