Marksman Talent

By Vladimus, in Only War

As stated in the book, the marksman talent removes penalties for Ballistic SkillTests at long or extreme range. This raises several possible balance/game mechanic issues. First of all, since Extreme Range is anything greater than 3x the weapons range, then that would mean if you can see it, you can shoot it. With a long range weapon like a sniper rifle or long las I can see thatbeing ok, but what about a Plasma Pistol for example. Does than mean Ican snipe targets several kilometers away witht my 30m range plasma pistol with a challenging (+0) BS test? That seems a little ridiculous. That brings me to the next major problem: grenades. So my ratling with a mighty strength bonus of 2 can spot an enemy Leman Russ 300m away, and with a flick of his tiny wrist hit within 1d5 meters a target that is at 50 times hisnormal range with no penalty. Lets raise the stakes for fun. I see a massive cruiser in orbit of the planet that is about 200km away. So I pick up a rock and attack the ship. Its so massive its an autohit, and since the attack will hit within a span of 6 seconds, the rock is traveling at a speed of 33.3km/second or about 74,000 mph which is roughly 60 times the speed of sound. So yeah I have turned into a railgun. Now these examples may be a bit extreme but I feel its necessary to illustrate the importance of an upper cap on extreme range especially for thrown weapons. THROWING GRENADES

Throwing grenades requires no special training or

Talents and is resolved using a Ballistic Skill Test

including any modifiers (such as range). On a miss, the

thrown grenade goes in a random direction—see the

Scatter Diagramon page 255.

Weapons cannot be fired at targets more than four times their range distance away. - Only War Core Rulebook, page 168, first column under the bold type: "Range".

Oh man I don't know how I missed that. Thanks ^^
