Preparation for Battle and Fleeing the Empire

By Clotu2, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Rules Questions

Okay, I have a question about the mechanics that go with the above mentioned objectives (Preparation for Battle and Fleeing the Empire).

Here is the hypothetical situation. Death Star dial is at 2. LS refreshes and shields Rogue 3 with Wedge as an enhancement. LS then engages a objective. DS has Vader and some other character with 1 gun icon (pick any you want) on the table and uses them to defend. The text of Preparation for Battle says no damage to a shielded unit. Let's say DS wins edge and strikes first with the random 1 gun icon character. Would this take off the shield so that Vader could then damage Rogue 3 as it is no longer shielded?

I am not sure whether the text of Preparation for Battle would prevent the shield from coming off. My understanding would be the shield soaks up damage and therefore the shield would not come off (per the objective), but I can an understand the argument for the other side that the 1 gun icon strike wouldn't damage Rogue 3 merely remove the shield. Thus allowing Vader to damage and now non-shielded Rogue 3.

Please answer this professionally I am not looking for people to start flaming others over the forums.

Since shielded units cannot be damaged the shield would stay as there is no damage they needed to stop since unit cannot be damaged at all

This is correct. What you need is a unit with Tactics in this case (though with Wedge around that's less useful). Prep for Battle doesn't prevent placing focus tokens, including with tactics, so your opponent will have to decide between using the shield to absorb the tactics and leaving their unit vulnerable or having their unit focused and unable to strike.

Using Shields
A player may discard a card’s shield token to prevent one damage or one focus token that would be placed on the shielded card by an attack or an enemy effect (i.e.it cannot prevent damage and focus tokens placed by its controller’s costs or effects).

Understand that you do not have to move the shield token when you are damaged. You MAY but you do no have to, Same thing with a tactics token, if someone focuses you you may let them to prevent that character from dying

Hence why I said you'd force your opponent to decide between being focused or losing their invulnerability. Unless they have 2 shield tokens, which is rare.

You really don't even need to think about that, say I have Double strike in my hand. Go ahead focus me, I don't want the damage to go through. Or because of the objective, I don't want to lose my shield token since I can get rid of the tactics (Trust your feelings, etc)

I think i am just repeating what has been said, i will shut up…lol…

Double strike won't help you there as the unit won't get to strike if it gets focused. Basically, there are situations where the LS will want to take the focus and there are situations where they'll risk the damage. Either way, tactics are the best counter to Prep for Battle.

Thanks guys/gals for clearing that up for me. I appreciate it.
