What to get

By herozeromes, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I am new to the tabletop RPG and am wondering if I should buy the Beginner's Set or just wait and get the full game when it arrives. Feedback is much appreciated.

If you are new to RPGs, get the Beginner's Box. Totally worth it.

Even if you don't end up playing through the adventure, you get a mini-rulebook and a set of the dice.

I would say that the Beginner's box is an excellent purchase for your situation. It is very much an introduction to the game and its mechanics, but also a good introduction to roleplaying (even if the adventure is a bit of a railroad). Not to mention getting the dice you will need to play. Personally I would highly recommend it.

It'ss a difficult question to answer without knowing what you are looking for. I would echo what the others have said, in that the Beginner Box is worth picking up. It gives a nice introduction to the (simplified) rules, which might give your players a good transition into the game. It also provides dice, as well as an introductory adventure with poster maps that can easily be reused (including floor plan of a YT-1300).

The core rulebook should also contain an introductory adventure, but it will not provide dice or poster maps. While you can easily get by with just the core rulebook, it will be a bit more of a learning curve for your players if you try to start there.

Personally, I would wait for the full game, unless you're pretty new to RPGs in general. I have the Beginners' Box, and it's not bad at all. It introduces the rules bit by bit, has some premade characters and a set of dice. The included adventure is pretty basic, short, and railroaded. I got it so that I could play with my wife and two kids, all beginners (nevermind that my wife has been playing these games for almost 10 years and enjoys them, when it comes to the rules, I think she will always be a beginner). Those who know RPGs pretty well might feel too much is lacking (like character creation), and the wait for the full product is getting shorter every day.

So the Beginner's Box is a decent product, but it is what it is. There's a much longer adventure that follows the one in the box. You can download it for free from Fantasy Flight's Star Wars page. It starts getting much more in depth, and it's not totally necessary to play the one before it. Whichever you choose, good luck!

Since I have not played any of the tabletop RPGs before, it sounds like the beginner's box is the way to go (especially for the dice). It will be a relatively inexpensive way to see if I actually like this sort of game. Thanks for your input!

I have played RPG for nigh on twenty years now and still bought the begginers box. :)

I echo some of the comments above. Still good to buy as you can re-use the maps and the dice are a necessity. The rule book (if there is no major change to the core rule book to be released, will be good to hand around the table if people need a reference point.

Also, there's something to be said for the way you can just 'dive in' to the Beginner Game, whereas with the Core book, if you're the GM, you're gonna want to hunker down and study that thing for a while.

When all is said and done, the bang/buck ratio of the Beginner Game is quite high, and more dice are always welcome! :)
