I have a Regiment that has the Sniper Rifle as one of their Favoured Weapons, so I select it for my Weapons Specialist. I have dreams of becoming a Shapshooter advanced Specialty, but when I do, I need to turn in the Sniper Rifle that came with being a Weapons Specialist and in exchange I gain either a Triplex Lasgun, a Long Las, or a Missile Launcher. WTF? What's wrong with a Shapshooter that keeps on using a Sniper Rifle?
Weapons Specialist to Sharpshooter = Loose the Sniper Rifle?

Department of Munitorum doesn't always have "bullets" which from what I gather is why las weapons are unversal. So both the Triplex Lasgun and the Long Las would be more accessible in my opinion.
Besides next advance the character can always choose to switch back to being a weapon specialist and get the regimental sniper rifle back.
Why not just acquire it through Logistics, or make it your Signature Wargear? There's some new Talent that makes you always have a certain item.

Per Only War, Bullets are Plentiful while Charge Packs are Common, so bullets are easier to get than new charge packs. Of course, you can recharge a charge pack and reuse it so it's not necessarily an equal comparison. However, other examples of Plentiful include the Uplifing Primer and the IG-slang for an inkpen. With those in mind, I don't think lack of bullets is a good reason why a trained Sharpshooter should give up his sniper rifle.

I thought all items that you got through req (except mission-specific ones) were yours to keep? Not just for the mission, a la Deathwatch.

I'd say its just a bit of an oversight on the part of failing to consider a Weapon Specialist could have a sniper rifle. The Long-Las is obviously listed in Sharshooter to allow for that role.
I would say if the regimental favorite is a sniper rifle, thats a perfectly fine thing to allow in. Just realize I think the idea is to avoid allowing plasma gun (pretty sure it can accept the Accurate increase as well), which is why we don't see it list giving access to a more generic "or 1 Regiment Favorite basic weapon."
They're marksmen, not outright snipers. That job is for the Ratling, thus why they're not called "Snipers" and get options for things like misile launchers. That's my interpretation.

Technically the Sharpshooter wouldn't have to give it up. Replacing it or getting ammo for it could be a problem as it's no longer part of his/her standard kit.
I would think he/she would still be able to draw on the Regimental bonus for a Logistics check to obtain one.
Or the Sharpshooter could always trade with his/her comrade.
As to the writer's making a mistake and excluding that weapon from the the starting kit of the Adnvancement, the character qualifies for this after character creation and presumably while in the field or cross trained and once qualified the Deptartmento Munitorum issues the new weapon set which favours las weapons.
Arbitrator makes a good point, with the Specialists not getting the same love as the grunts, I would be a little annoyed if my Ratling Sniper and Squad cook just got upstaged by the Sharpshooter.
Or as others have alreaady stated, house rule it
I have to say I found the inclusion of the missile launcher as quite amusing. Now, I can see the justification, as it is more a specialist ranged character in general, and so you coudl have a specialist rocket launcher, but theidea of making a sniper who uses a missle launcher amuses me.
In my opinion, it's more like "you exchange the equipment provided by the basic specialization" than give away all your current equiptment and only take the equipment from the advanced spec instead.
In other words: in case of the weapon specialist, you only exchange the lasgun (or other standard weapon) with the long las or triplex or rocket launcher (yeah, a bit silly, but that thing has range!)
So if you choose the regiments favorite weapon, this should be always provided by regiments logistic, not specialization…
