So I need something clarified please. When an attack fails and the attackers must "retreat" back to their starting territory, are they then considered "routed"? Or are defending units who are defeated are only "routed"? Thanks for your help and input.

All losing units (whether attacker OR defender) must retreat -- all retreated units are placed on their sides to
signify they are now routed.
