Chatting with James Kniffen

By hothie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was able to attend the Star Wars Experience put on by FFG this weekend, and I was able to corner James Kniffen and Jay Little and got some explanations and insights from them about the game. Here is what I learned, in order of me remembering them: :)

1. Dutch Vander's ability is specifically worded so that the ally does not need to take an action in order to receive the free target lock. So this settles the debate about the ally having the Damaged Sensor Array card and being able to receive Dutch's ability. Jay thought the ally wouldn't be able to spend that lock due to the DSA card "blanking out" the action bar, but James corrected that and said that it could spend the lock, it just couldn't take the lock on its own turn. He said that the ally needed to have the target lock icon in its action bar in order to receive the lock from Dutch, though.

2. James said that the _intent_ of Daredevil is to give a stress token, but he conceded that as the rules are written that it does not right now. Expect that to come out in an FAQ. (more on that later)

3. He also said that R2 Astromech does make the Daredevil maneuver green.

4. In regards to the FAQ, he knows that there needs to be a new one addressing more Wave 2 questions. But he said that since we are in the Regional Season, that they won't put one out because the people who have completed their Regionals would complain equally as loud as the people who haven't completed their regionals if it comes out mid-season. So after the Regional Season ends, expect a new FAQ to come out, for fairness sake. Until then, he's just going to have to answer the giant stack of questions he has individually rather than in an FAQ setting.

Also, and this was more from the developers panel than from James, but the delay(s) in Wave 2 was due to the plant in China needing to change up how it made the minis in order to make the millenium falcon. They could have put out a much lower quality product earlier, but they decided to take the heat and adhere to the higher standards of quality in order to make a better product. So, for all who complained about the delays in wave 2, just keep that in mind the next time you get your falcon out, and appreciate how good it looks. Know that those two things are connected.

That's all that I can remember for now. If I remember more I'll update and post on here.

This is interesting, because it goes against the article in the Tournament booklet that gives a couple of squadron examples. In it, it is stated that Colonel Jendon's ability can give target locks to TIE Interceptors, which do not have TL on their action bar. I wonder what the difference is?

Jendon is actually giving the token, not the lock, from my understanding. Jendon is actually taking the lock, and then passing the token to another ship, even if it doesn't have the TL action.

OK, that makes sense, considering the wording.

Nice to see a few long standing questions answered there, good job Hothie!

So a new FAQ in July or thereabouts? When's the last Regional?

Thanks for the report. I would have assumed differently on the R2 thing, but I don't really care as long as it's clear.

Did they say that there might be Delays for Wave 3, or are they confident in the Q3 target for those products?

One last thing, is there a scan of that promo booklet anywhere that could be found for those of us far away from MN?

Regional season ends in June, so July would be a fair timetable for a new FAQ. The delays were due to the plant changing things up in order to make a quality falcon. Since the shuttle is the only large ship of this set, I wouldn't expect delays, but you never know. And there are scans of the booklet floating around, I'm on my phone, so you'll just have dig for them.

I hadn't seen the scans show up. any advice for searching for them? Is it on A Few Maneuvers?

Thanks again for sharing the info.

2. I guess this means that "Execute a Maneuver" is indeed only step 3, and steps 2 and 5 aren't really steps. Hope they put some actual effort into cleaning this one up in the FAQ.

3. This is why I never try to introduce intent into rules discussions ;)

4. Bleargh. I suspect that those with regionals still to play would appreciate having clarifications more than those who have already played would be upset by knowing something was played wrongly, and it's not like someone who's going to get upset over a wrongly-ruled thing wouldn't get just as upset come July when they release it. But I can understand the position, at least.

Yeah, I got the feeling that they knew whichever way they went that someone would be complaining about the faq. So to keep it fair for everyone, they will wait til the regional season ends to put one out.

Awesome.

Thanks for the updates Hothie.

did you ask about the other weird stuff, like how Ywings do not get any elite pilot talent slots, or why there is no mook Ywing/Xwing/TIEadv with the ability for an elite pilot talent slot etc

Because of a close reading of the rules.

From p. 7 of the core rulebook: (extraneous text removed)

1. Reveal Dial
2. Set Template
3. Execute Maneuver
4. Check Pilot Stress: If the ship just executed
a red maneuver, place one stress token near the
ship. If the ship just executed a green maneuver,
remove one stress token from the ship (if any)
and return the token to the miscellaneous token
supply (see “Stress” on page 17).
5. Clean Up
6. Perform Action
Daredevil just says "Execute a {Turn 1} maneuver". So it only applies step 3. (and, necessarily, 2) But Step 4 is written so that it's subsequent to the actual maneuver, and the text of Daredevil doesn't tell you to move on to subsequent steps--therefore, you don't Check Stress any more than you'd Perform Action an extra time. (Though I'd expect it would help to Clean Up, for practical reasons.)

Building on what Grimwalker said, Daredevil is an action, so it takes place in step 6. Checking pilot stress happens in step 4. So you wouldn't actually get a stress token for Daredevil. He did say that there will be an FAQ forthcoming after the Regional season ends, so I would expect to see some errata in there.
