New transport solutions?

By Keoki, in X-Wing

Just curious… now that the Lambda-class shuttle is set to ruin most conventional X-Wing transport solutions, such as my Plano 5231, in what are you planning to carry your ships after Wave 3?

The wings of the shuttle can be moved, so maybe we won't have to look for another solution.

It won't fit. I looked at that last night. I'm thinking about buying battle foam but I am against it. I don't know.

Folded it will take almost 3 x 3 x 3in. This wont fit most storage. I am considering skipping it for this reason.

I have no doubt that something will pop into someone's head and solve the problem. Based on the pictures, if it can be stored with wings folded (which is probably the reason they do) laying on its side we need something about 2-1/2 inches deep, and compartments five inches or so long. There has to be something out there. We'll find it.

The battlefoam bag I got has a 3" pluck foam tray. I really hope it's not taller than that.

The large ship bases are just over 3" wide. In the photo with the folded wings, it looks a little less than that. I'm estimating 2-1/2", so you should be ok.

I definitely recommend a wargaming bag. They look awesome, protects your models, and has room for future expansions.

The one I use and love is by Portable Warfare. The 2" blufoam fits the falcon and slave 1 with spare room, and I imagine a 3" would fit anything they come out with.

I've got all my ships in 1.5" foam and use a 2" tray for all the bases, ship tokens and dials. The 3" block should work for the Shuttle when it comes out.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if a million Plano owners suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced…

You win the internet for today, sir. That made me laugh out loud.

I decided when I bought the Core Set, that a Plano box for models was going to not work for me in the long run, and I didn't want to buy something that would ultimately need to be tossed because my collection outgrew it. I knew from the get-go, that this game would make it as far as Wave 3 before we ran out of "movie" ships, and the inclusion of the Moldy Crow really alludes to there easily being many Waves to come.

So with that in mind, I also did not want to go with a clunky toolbox either, as they can get pricey, especially if you have to toss it, or some future, as yet to be announced, "pack" comes out that won't fit in it.

So here's what I've been doing;

Initially, I bought something like this;

http://www.trollandtoad.com/p108698.html

I kept all the plastic shelling that the ships from the Core and the Expansion packs came in, and they slot into the box perfectly. The 3-Pack plastic shell from core can lay in there on its back side with the ships facing up, and can be stacked 2-high. From there, I stack the rest of the non-Large ships in vertically in rows, and they're the perfect height again.

I use some foam spacers I've collected from various deckbuilding games to fill in the empty space, and take them out as I added more ships.

Finally, towards the back of one of the rows, I have all my Pilot cards sleeved and divided between Rebels and Imperials, with a couple of top loaders on either side to bracket them in and keep them from jumping around. They fit in there great at the end of a row of ships.

For the dials, tokens, etc, I have them in a large flat Plano container, so I can just basically reach in and grab all the ships/tokens I need on the fly. The box may not be the most resiliant thing in the world, but 95% of my games are at home, and the box takes up very little room. For transport, I can just grab the box and the Plano, and I'm out the door.

Now, with the Large ships, I used a cardboard box that a bunch of Tassimo coffee discs came in. I took the plastic shell for my Falcon and Slave I, put the base/stem/ship tokens in the bottom of it, then used a rubber band to keep it together. Sadly, the Large shells don't close nice and snug like the others did.

This isn't at all the most visually pleasing solution, but I know there are going to be a lot of additions to come to my collection, and between everything I have, I won't need to address something new until at least Wave 4. The B-Wings, Bombers and Crows can all go in the card box, and the Shuttles can go in the Tassimo box.

I've yet to feel comfortable taking the ships out of the shells and into some space-saving foam, because I know that ultimately I'm going to need to regularly reconfigure everything as I buy more product, whereas this way, I'm only out a couple of bucks on another card box if I need it, and maybe when the collection grows, a second Plano for dials and tokens, at which point I'll separate the two into a Rebel and Imperial setup.

I already kept a second Tassimo box and have it sitting in my closet, ready to be used when the time comes, probably a year from now. I figure by the time that many Large ships are out of the game, a better solution for that will present itself.
