Critical hits and minions

By martyjopson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Here is the situation. A wookiee is being attacked by a pair of minions (droids, thugs, whatever). The wookiee retaliates with a vibroaxe, hits and delivers 10 damage but also rolls a triumph. The ten damage is enough to take out one minion. Can the wookiee use the critical to take out a second minion?

I have ruled that this is perfectly OK, and suitably cinematic as they take out two enemies in one swing. But what do the rules as written say?

There is a similar situation when a player rolls enough damage to take out one minion and have damage left over. What happens to this damage? Does it carry over to a second minion? If so, should the minion soak be applied to the damage a second time? So, imagine you have a group of minions with soak 4 and wounds 4. You hit them for 13 points of damage - what happens? Does one minion go down, or two minions, or one minion down and another takes one point?

In play I have been ruling that they take down more minions, as that is what the minions are there for - to die in droves…

Yeah, the triumph can be spent to inflict a critital injury on the minions, as per normal rules, which, in turn kills a minion. (Beta Text, p196, under the section labled Minions are killed by Critical Injuries )

Sorry, missed the second question in there.

Soak is only applied once to a group of minions. So when you hit a minion group with soak 4 and 4 wounds/minion with one hit of 13 damage, 9 (= 13 - 4 = Dmg - Soak) damage goes through, killing at least two minions and 1 pt of damage to a third.

As I suspected - more minion casualties makes for more fun…

thanks

The beginner rules are a little vauge, but basically think of a group of minions as one single character. They all act as one, take one turn, one maneuver, one attack. Every additional minion after the first(in a group) is just there to improve the specific skills of that minion type.
