Venomous Blade with no target

By Reric, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Are you allowed to take venomous blade out of shadows if there is no character in play with printed strength 2 or less?

I'm going to break this down a little further just so this thread has a more all-encompassing answer.

You CAN bring Venomous Blade out of Shadows whether or not there is a character in play with Printed Strength 2 (this second effect will fizzle).

You CAN NOT bring Venomous Blade out of Shadows if there is no character under your control for you to attach it to (You literally can't initiate taking it out of Shadows and thus will not be able to kill a character)

Wrong - there's no reason you can't trigger the effect simply because a subsequent passive won't resolve. You can pay the gold to take it out of shadows (the gold isn't payed to initiate the passive), initiate the passive (Attach it to a character), and fail to succeed in resolving it. You will not be able to kill a character, as that is contingent on having successfully attached it.

Now if the ability said "Any phase: Pay the rest of VB's gold cost to bring it out of shadows and attach it to a character you control", *then* you wouldn't be able to initiate it.

Ok, thought i would chime in, i dont understand what is wrong with MDC's answer or what part is wrong. As far as i can tell he is correct

Ok, well i have reread through this and now understand.

Technically you could still bring VB out of shadows but it would be disarded if there is no character to attach it to, In most circumstances this would not be done ( as you would waste VB ), however the reason this was mentioned and clarified is because there may be circumstances when you choose to do this ( for example bonuses when there are no cards in shadows ).

Hope this helps

You may have missed the reasons for Passives and Responses on Shadow cards that appear to trigger upon them leaving Shadows since it was such an old question. This text is actually clarification that this card does not come out of Shadows like a traditional card would. So for Venomous Blade, the passive must actually be met for it to come out of Shadows as it is clarifying the method by which it comes out of Shadows. Khudzlin or someone should be able to back me up on this.
