My warrensburg regional recap.

By Silver leader, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My squad: Silver Squadron
Green Squadron:Homing Missles/expert handeling
Horton: Ion cannon/R5-D8
Wedge: R2-D2/Shield Upgrade/Determination

Round 1: 4 x-wings (rookie, rookie, Biggs, Wedge+swarm tactics)

This match hurt, my opponate (who ended up taking first) worked me. My Y-wing flew into the maw of his formation flying, the Y-wing was shot down in the single attack round. Wedge and Green squad focused on Biggs, doing a little damage, and in turn breaking the formation up. After splitting up biggs and wedge i turned to wedge. But despite breaking the formation apart and dealing some damage to his 2 aces, green squadron was taken down. Soon after my wedge scored a good assult on his wedge dropping him. We were about to start next movement round but i pointed out his rookie pilot was in attack range of wedge and well, that was my downfall. Shot landed and killed my last guy.

Round 2: Green Squadron+cluster, Wedge+torps and R5 (i think), Dutch+torpsx2+and some astromech.

This match was pretty standered, the most exciting moment was the start. his team went straight after my A-wing who i decided to play bait. pulling their focus i flew dead at them. then made a hard 1 turn and drew them to the middle bottlenecking all 3 in and astroid cluster. As my A-wing escaped, wedge and Horton flew in and started unloading. after he regrouped it started to blance back out, but once he lost wedge it was smooth sailing there on out. we traded shots and Horton ended up getting shot down. but his wedge being more exspinsive gave me the modified win.

Round 3: Obsidian Squad swarm w/ Howlrunner+stealth device.

Ther start of the round seemed to tip in my favor, a few slight mistakes in some formation flying made him forego some actions and howlrunner corner touching an asteroid early on gave me some hope and opened me up to do what i can. I dropped one tie, and damaged 2 others but with 5 ties on Wedge he didn't stand much of a chance. After wedge went down he turned to the A-wing. While they got reformed up and focused i managed to shoot another Tie down. But now green squad had 5 Ties on his tail and my only option was to out fly him since out running wasn't an option. And it ALMOST worked. To his surprise instead of going bank 3 or 5 dead ahead. I take a hard one, and expert handeling towards his ships. A daring move that almost made 3 TIE's fly right passed, but instead made 1 fly past and put 2 barely at range one, the other 2 he played safe and were at range 2-3 shots. I gambled and lost. Green squad went down.

All in all a lot of fun. A few nail biters but in the end, MVP ended up being Wedge, and the A-wing has reached the chopping block in my squad.

nice report. cheers for sharing. i love wedge, hes my mvp most games. imo the A-wings are harder to build around than any other ship. missiles are still too random for my liking, i think if they were slightly cheaper they see much more play.

I agree completely. Missles and Proton torpedos seem wasteful in my opinion. i spend 4 points on a one time 4 dice roll, when i could invest those points into a better pilot or upgrade that has a mulit use ability.

When i've played as the A-wing the situation normally turns out like this (if he survives long enough): Position at a good angle, fire missles, partial hit or miss, fire standard 2 dice attack, realize that i now have a 23-30 point ship whos job was to shoot 1 missle and run.
I LOVE A-wings in star wars lore. But the ship falls short on the battle field here. If it could carry 2 missles, and an astromech on the green squad and up (we'll say the prototype pilot A-wings were too early stage to house astromechs, keeping the 17 point cost ligit) it would be a much more viable ship.

Nice report. Sounds like you had fun, which is the most important part. I have to agree about missiles/torpedos being a waste, especially for rebel players (unless it's assault missiles into a tie formation). The only time I see missiles being playable is cluster missiles on Vader. And even then I wouldnt call it any better than mediocre.

i can only really justify missiles as away to reduce shields on the larger ships from long range. Even then they r iffy unless placed on a decent pilot becuase on a leser pilot u move before they r in target lock range.

some suggestions that would make missiles better without being too good.

1) allow them to be fired even if the ship firing them is detroyed the same turn

2) introduce a pilot skill upgrade that either makes them cheaper or more effective (something similar to marksman but applies to missiles AND helps with firing accuracy with your primary weapon as well even after missiles r gone… something like STAY ON TARGET "when attacking reroll one of your blank results, if this is a secondary weapon you may reroll all blank results".

3) As suggested here already, introduce an upgrade that lets ships carry an additional missile/torpedo but at a minimal cost (at 4-5pts they r already a bit too expensive to justify)

I am glad you had a lot of fun, but why exactly that squad? It seems a bit… suboptimal

Don't get me wrong everyone should play what he wants and likes but i would not go to a tournament with a squad like this. It is too…friendly xd.

Why expert handling on the Green squadron? just give him Deadeye or PTL if you want him an elite skill that makes sense, Horton is cool but he is one of the few pilots where a torp would make some sense. Wedge with R2D2 and shield upgrade is not bad either but in a 3-ship you hardly have the luxury of a lot of greens when you are hard pressed because the enemy has more ships than you pretty often…
