Cosmic Encounter with TWO players

By Yves Van Herp, in Cosmic Encounter

Hello guys,

are there official FFG rulings concerning playing CE with just 2 players (being my wife and myself). We do have the AH-version (which was not that good IMHO) and we got even an answer of one of the designers. But we were told there was an (official?) answer to this published by FFG . Can someone give me an answer or a link to a thread on this forum. I would really appreciate this very much.

Thanks very much,

Yves

As far as I know, there is no official two-player variant for FFG's edition.

Okay, thank you, Toomay!

I played that variant a couple weeks ago. It worked out okay, but mostly it just made us want to play a real game. Better than I'd have thought, though, really.

And way better than one -player CE. :)

At least twice as good I would think...

I've actually been tinkering with a solo version of CE, off an on, for a couple of years. I'm not totally satisfied with it, and there's some things (moving ships is the best example) that just seem too repetitive and dull.

I'm mostly just messing around with it; I doubt it'll ever amount to much.

There were official two player rules published for Avalon Hill's edition. Here are the rules:

TWO-PLAYER GAME

In a two-player game the Orders are not used, except to determine the first player. Encounters are made, as you wish, on your opponent‘s planets or on your own system where your opponent has a colony. There are no alliances. Also, you lose the use of your Alien Power when you no longer have FOUR home colonies.

I've played that way and it works okay, but it it just made me want a real game too.

Two players existed in EON's version as well, and no difference in rules of the game. The only difference is there were a handful of powers that stated at the bottom "Do not use in a 2 player game".
