Should a TO play in a regional?

By rapatpamp, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hello all I just would like an opinion on this.

I was at a regional and we had 13 ppl 1 being the TO. I have absolutely no problem with a TO playing but heres what happened.

I played 1st round and lost with the TO getting a bye. No problem.

Second round I get a bye. TO wins. No problem again.

Heres the problem , my 3rd game I played a guy who just pretty much did everything you could wrong. He moved asteroids , templets , ships , ect. The To was playing his 3rd game and I hadnt realized this guy had a complaint on him already from his 1st opponent for the same things (he lost his 2nd game). Now I didnt say anything and I am not complaining I lost but how I did sucks because this guy made top 4 (I really hope he didnt win 1st) , and wasnt even useing his own ships (turns out he doesnt own anything for X-wing). Anyway I personally think the TO should have watched the guys next games after recieving a complaint already but it would have messed with the TOs opponent which wasnt fair.

Anyway what are your thoughts on these kind of situations?

Sorry but I forgot to mention the TO did talk to him about it and he ARGUED with the TO (who BTW is a great guy and didnt deserve it).

In the tournament rules it states that if a TO is to play, there must be a non playing TO who can deal with any rules questions that could arise. It keeps the TO from taking advantage of his postion of power.

HMMM I did not know that was in the rules because of not running X-wing.

That really changes things so I should let the TO know so if there is a next time.

TY for the heads up :)

Yeah, take a look at the official tournament rules. The paragraph states, "The TO may participate in a tournament for which he or she is responsible only if there is a second Tournament Organizer present. This second TO must be present and announced at the beginning of the tournament, and is responsible for all rulings for games in which the primary TO is playing."

Hope that helps.

The second TO can also be playing but he makes rulings on the Main TO's games. I am a TO and I choose not to play in tournaments so there can be zero conflicts. I also do not play in most league night events unless we have an odd number from our 16 players which would keep someone from playing. Ine thing to think anout in the future is that if there is an issue, speak up. It is the primary job of the TO to make sure all disputes are dealt with, and if a player loses because of anothers actions and not gameplay, then it ruins the spirit of the game and the competition at hand.

You had a TO available to you. Had an issue with a player. And did not get the TO involved why?

All you had to do was ask the TO to come over and explain the issue. Why you didn't I'm not sure. But you are complaining about it now when you did nothing to handle it at the time.

You have to be willing to call a TO over. You would not have anyone competent or knowledgeable about the game as a TO if you barred them from also playing in the tournaments.

I competed in this regionals.

1: The guy in question did not take 1st.

2: One of the competetors at this tourn was the TO for the Lee Summit regionals. Maybe i missed it when smoking, but i believe it was not formally expressed/announced but any discrepency in rules in his game, he was qualified to rule on.

3: the whole situation with the player who recieved complaints was an odd one. The rules allow a margin of error for bumping and such, but from what i heard from ALL 3 of his opponates was that it was sloppy, at best, game play. Which in this game a little can be a lot. After all complaints had been expressed to the TO BEFORE top 4 started. He issued a warning to all (4) players to watch there movements and allowed him to continue to semi finals.

I'm not a TO so i don't know how it should have been handled but it didn't quite feel right. And I would love to talk all kinds more about my personal feelings on it all, but I'd rather not. And all else aside i feel as though th TO was a little below par, he organized us well, but there were a few thing that just dropped him notch by notch: organizing the event only a few hours before a Magic pre-release event (that you have to also help with) and not issuing all of the prize support so you can use it for other x-wing events, things like that. I don't want to sound like i'm bashing, just stating what i saw.

You should contact FFG in regards to them keeping the prize support. That is not kosher.

he gave out the Regional patches to all players. Then focus tokens and big Han/boba fett cards to only the top 4. Anything after that i didn't see.

I think any event TO should not play unless there is an odd player out. Even then they should preclude themselves from pirizes. That's how I would do it personally anyway.
