Poison question

By Ref, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi everyone,

How do you as DM play with poison? As example, Until it's treat, lose 1 strain every hour? what will be the skill to use to see if the poison take effect after an attack?

Thank you for your ideas

Carl

So, for clarity, you're looking for poison use beyond what's presented in the Beta text (p114)?

Well, with the exception of the neuroparalytic (which stuns the target for three rounds), poisons in EotE appear to be one-shot deals, unless a Despair is generated, which the GM can use to have the poison attack the character again.

I'd think that if you're going to have poisons keep attacking the target, it'd be a Resilience check to keep resisting the poison's effects, though given how quickly a character can be debilitated from the neurotoxin (5 Wounds plus Strain damage per threat) and anethestic (5 Strain plus possible action loss), having a poisoned PC get hammered with these effects round after round would quickly put them out of commission.

My suggestion would be to reduce the difficulty of the Resilience check to fight off the poison's effects by one degree. This way, the poison can still be a threat, but not a crippling one, particularly as Brawn isn't a huge priority for most characters aside from melee fighters who need it for damage output, with Resilience also being less important. Further, if you are going to have the character keep getting attacked by the poison each round, allow them to spend a Triumph to effecively purge the poison from their system, thus preventing them from being further affected by it.

Alternatively, keep the same difficulty levels, but cut the damage dealt in half (rounded down), again to keep said poisons from taking down your PCs too quickly, particularly as some GMs might also rule that damage inflicted by poisons gets to bypass the target's Soak. The rules don't back that assertiion up (damage is damage, and all damage is reduced by the target's Soak Value), but some GMs are funny like that.
