Han without Gunner?

By Shooter Mcgavin2, in X-Wing

Is gunner really necessary on Han with his re roll ability? With just marksmanship, and his re roll, this should give you a very good chance of a three damage roll almost every turn. Just a thought. Was curious if anyone tried Han without Gunner to any success. Was trying to save those extra points to upgrade to Wedge with determination and a rookie. Seems interesting.

The big reason to have gunner is it forces your opponent to defend twice, hopefully forcing them to spend evade/focus tokens on the first attack, leaving them with none for the second attack. While Han does have a decent chance to get hits with his reroll ability, it is still just 1 attack, and you have to reroll ALL your dice, so there is a chance the second roll will be worse. I think Han's ability by itself isn't too bad, but with gunner you can attack, reroll, attack, reroll (theoretically).

Han plus gunner plus marksmanship is an absolute nightmare for ships that depend on not being hit (any TIE, A-Wings).

I understand the reasoning behind using Gunner, stripping evades and focuses, etc. But I guess my question is, is Han/Marksmanship, Wedge/Determination and a Rookie worth the tradeoff of Gunner and Chewie on Han? This adds another 9 skill pilot and possibly more early offense, while maybe helping Wedge stay alive a turn longer? The only thing I don't like about Han Shoots First is that half of your force is shooting at pilot skill 2. Having Wedge gives you another offensive punch while maybe not losing that much from Han. Input?

Think about this, you are playing against me with Han+Marksmanship+Gunner, I've got some ties. You pick one tie and shoot at it. I know if I have to evade all the attacks that second attack from the gunner is going to suck. Also I might have to use all my tokens to avoid the first attack. In addition that last hit that is going to get through is a crit. So I can gambel or accept the fact that I'm taking one damage and it is a crit. Now take out the gunner. I'm rolling three dice with an evade token or a focus and I can hope for the best and try to evade all of the attack with no consequence for doing so. If I go up against Han and wedge I can try to avoid two deadly attacks but at some point in that game I will only have to try to avoid one attack.
