Repainting the TIE Interceptor?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

So I can't be the only person who is bothered by the blue color of the TIE Interceptor being so different from the other TIE Fighters (while the TIE and TIE Advanced in ANH were definitely whiter than the later movies, the same TIE Fighters once on-screen in the later movies were painted the same color as the Interceptors and Bombers…IE., the color on-screen did change a bit between movies, but all TIE variants were always the same color within a movie)

Oh, also, not to mention the two 'laser canons' under the cockpit, in the same position and number as the regular TIE Fighter, instead of on the solar panel points. *sigh*

Anyway - has anyone experimented with paint colors on the mini to figure out which works best to match the color of the TIE Fighter and TIE Advanced? Seems like it would be fairly straightforward - one color on the body of the fighter (not painting over the panel tiles or cockpit), then a black wash, and that's that, but…

…what color to use?

I wouldn't go for a hole repaint, instead i would just dry brush a light grey to make it pop

Hrm. Maybe that would work? Certainly would be a lot easier.

Still have to repaint the laser canons, though - that's just ridiculous having only 2, under the cockpit, like the fighter.

And, still…I dunno, it's really very blue…

As far as the laser cannons go, they did retain the mounting points of the TIE/ln's cannons, as the background material says, and were capable of mounting the guns if additional power generators could be mounted to fire them. Should the "empty" mounts be highlighted like the FFG models are? Probably not, but it really doesn't bother me.

Interestingly enough, some of the TIE/in's in RoTJ had their cannon shots PROBABLY erroneously coming from the pod mount guns, rather than the solar panel tips:

I had a go at repainting (without stripping) a TIE Interceptor to try and match the TIE Fighters more grey color:

Yeah, saw that pic over on BGG. It isn't really clear from it, though, how close that color is to the TIE Fighters - lighting and such makes things difficult to gauge without side-by-side shots.

I repainted mine a while back. It would be easier to thin some blue wash to make the advanced and regular TIEs match the interceptor, but I prefer the white color myself.

And there they are with the rest of the fleet.

Those Avengers…where??!!??? I saw some on Shapeways, but hadn't ordered any to try yet. Are those from there, or another source?

Yeah, they definitely look much better white.

Also, I only have 5 Interceptors, and 10 Fighters or Advanced TIEs, so…much less work going the other way. sonreir

Oh, I made those cutting up some regular TIE Advanced, adding some plasticard strips and a bit of putty. It's not a perfect representation, but it's close enough.

I don't do a whole lot of miniature painting (the only thing I've ever completed was a Bloodbowl team of dwarves) so could you tell us exactly which paint you used? I find that everytime I choose a paint, it always ends up darker than I wanted it to be after I use it.

Actually, would you be able to type up a quick explanation on how you painted them as well?

Would greatly appreciate it. :)

Just noticed that even the Tie Interceptor avatar icons are grey as well. Gah, really wish FFG just stuck with grey for all of the Imperial fighters in the first place.

Those Avengers look awesome! :)

My appologies for the threadomancy. But as with my other ships, as soon as I got the new TIE Bombers I couldn't help but strip the original paint and repaint them in "A New Hope" white to match my other TIEs. Included in the photo is a bomber in it's original "Empire Strikes Back" blue.

I'll do a family portrait of all the ships together sometime in the future.

I love all these paint jobs - they look great! If I had to go with my preference, I kind of like the look of the white ANH color scheme better. However, from a tactical perspective, I can see how the darker blue might be more advantageous in a battle.

They look nice - I do wish someone had gone the other way, though, and painted all the regular ties that more blue color to match the Interceptors, so we could see what that looked like.

I used the GW Nuln Oil (no dilution) to wash over the Tie Interceptors. It turned it a dark blue which is way better than the original color. I'll post pics when I get home.
