Duplicate monster groups,

By JBouthietteJr, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello fellow Descenters!

I game pretty **** often, and Descent has been the next big thing with my group. With all the constant playing we do, I've had the semi-often thought that I'll have to pick up another copy in the game in the future because I imagine the map tiles disintegrating from the use (my Arkham board is held together by duct tape, so I don't imagine this being an entirely unfounded concern).

And that thought led to this: if I have multiple copies of the game, I'll have a bunch of extra monsters. Is there anything against having two monster groups which are the same monsters? i.e. two groups of elementals, three groups of cave spiders, etc. Sorry for being "that guy" who doesn't look in the rules/FAQ myself for this, but I thought it'd make for interesting discussion for if anyone swarmed their heroes with a legitimate army of fire imps or the like.

I don't imagine there being much else you could use with a second copy of the base game besides replacing worn pieces/cards, so actively using all the monsters definitely appeals to me from a cost standpoint if/when that time comes (not that I need all that much incentive to spend more of my money on great games!)

Interesting question - even if I would believe that only a minority of players could have to apply it.

I don't see why you could not have two same open groups.
Perhaps should there be a way to differenciate the groups, just to be sure to keep with group limits when reinforcing (with 2-3 heroes) ?

Well, the rulebook does say this on page 16:

"Each Monster card lists the number of monsters in a group based on the number of heroes. All monsters of a given type are considered to be part of the same monster group. Any game effect that affects a monster group affects each monster within that group."

Emphasis FFG's.

However, having two copies of the game to play with, I would not personally be opposed to a house rule allowing duplicate monster groups.

try it with some quests that you have already played…see if it makes that much of a differnace.
