Prediction: Rohan and Boromir's Journey North

By Style75, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Why Saruman? Was there any reference in the books to him making rings? I know he was on the hunt for the one ring, but I don't remember any mention of him trying to make one.

"’For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-Maker, Saruman of Many Colors"

Saruman

i remember that quote, but i will need to hunt down the page etc.

"Either at this time or shortly before Saruman's studies of ring-lore paid off, and he seems to have emulated part of the skill of the Noldor of Eregion and created his own Ring. He probably used this to enhance his skills, and became an even greater enchanter with the power of his voice. It however seems unlikely that his Ring was as powerful as one of the Three Rings of the Elves, let alone the One Ring."

tolkiengateway

this is a web quote which should be treated with caution, however i dont have the books to hand so cannot give direct quotes here

there are some interesting disucussions to be found on his ring, try lotrplaza

It's during the Council of Elrond, on p259 of my copy of Fellowship (I bought the fancy box set last year to update my battered copies :) ) That's the only reference to him making rings in his entry of the index, anyway.

But don't forget your native tongue Richard, it is Saruman of Many Colours (despite the software trying to underline the proper "u" spelling as a typo).

If I remember right, I thought Gandalf notices a ring on Saruman's finger.

EDIT: Ok, I found the quote: "But I rode to the foot of Orthanc, and came to the stair of Saruman; and there he met me and led me up to his high chamber. He wore a ring on his finger." I think the fact that Gandalf notices it, however briefly, means that it wasn't there before and is something new, which goes along with his declaration of being a Ring-maker. We can conclude that Saruman used knowledge gained from his investigations into ring-lore to make a ring sometime during the years before the war. Somehow the cycle will take us from working from Saruman to uncovering Saruman's ring-making. Actually, maybe we'll accidentally help Saruman make it? :o

indeed-i copy pasted that from the site, didnt realise it was wrong. it would have been out of character indeed for me to break 22 years of english spelling ;)

Yes, i think it is likely that the Ring-maker cycle will chart the fall of Saruman, with heroes initially helping him and at the end opposing him. Would be interesting to see if the element of corruption is explored in this cycle.

it is what MECCG did so wonderfully well, the corruption checks based on the items, actions and lures of your heroes. It had an end-of-game corruption check for all characters which could cost you victory if you didn't plan for it well. Some heroes, like Boromir, had built-in modifiers which made them more likely to fail a corruption check and Rings in particular (like the one Ring or seven Dwarven Rings) imparted massive amounts of corruption on their bearers.

It's an element that is missing from the LCG and should be there in my view.

Yes! I want to see this, and considering that probably this next cycle will be about magic artifacts and such we may have a mechanic similar to that one.

Thanks for the info on Saruman's ring. I had no idea Saruan had made a ring, which is funny because I've read the books about 5 times. LotR never ceases to amaze me with the level of detail it contains. Every time I read it I discover something new. Thanks for the info, I look forward to the Ring Maker series of AP's!
