What do you think will change when "large" ships are released?

By rapatpamp, in X-Wing

One possible reason why ffg came out with space tiles insead of a mat, may, imho, be that the large ships will come as tiles instead of 3D Ships

A star destroyer model would be the size of a living room. It's not going to happen. Please stop.

Sorry to pile on Rapatpamp, but sorry, you don't know the future either: you titled the thread as when Large ships are released, not "if."

Rapatpamp asked: "Go through and name EVERY ship you can think of that would be no bigger than what we have now and see how many "waves" can be realeased after that."

Well, if they have access to EU, lots of waves. Lots of TIE variants, Uglies, E-Wings, Yuuzhan Vong ships, Sun Crusher, the list goes on.

A shorter list is "name every larger ship that would be playable at 1:270 scale in 3'x3'?" Not a whole lot. A Corellian Corvette would barely fit but would have basically no room to move. A Nebulon-B could squeeze in corner-to-corner but would be nearly two feet tall, and would be functionally immobile. They'd be really expensive, not add (IMHO) a whole lot to the game besides a sitting target to shoot at, requiring no skill at maneuvering in order to engage.

Sorry, I just don't see too much in the design space that's much larger than what we have now.

You make probably the best point so far as the 1:270 scale goes. However for us casual players who don't always follow the 3x3 rule I could see a GR-75 medium transport for the rebels for mission based objectives. I understand that a lot of people who play tournements would kill this idea in a second, but at just over 13 inches on the 1:270 scale it's doable.

I don't see them releasing a ship that you cannot use in tournaments. Please note, this is different than releasing a ship that would be terrible in tournaments. Unless they plan to change the 3'x3' tournament standard, I don't see anything bigger being functional at a 1:270 scale.

A while back someone mentioned them making another game, similar to X-Wing, with bigger ships at a smaller scale. This would be your capital ship battle and then have tokens representing the fighters. Then if you chose, you could fight out the fighter engagements on a second play area with the X-Wing pieces. I don't see a tournament format forming out of this, but I think it would be a neat idea for them to make a capital ship game that is not quite compatible to the point where no one will be mixing the two games, but that they could link up.

Now that sounds cool like a zoom in function on the big battle!

I was with you until you said Sun Crusher.

I will actively petition FFG to never make a model of an invincible ice cream cone.

Even though I am all about diversifying this game and adding just about anything that is not too cumbersome in size, I would sign your petition.

For a laugh…

Person1: Want to play some x-wing, I'll use one ship and you can build a squadron of whatever you want with unlimited points. I'll even let you add upgrades to your ships that you can't according to the pilot cards.

Person 2: Wow really, what's the catch?

Person 1: My ship can only be destroyed by force hurdling it into a black hole.

Person 2: …. walks away.

I want a Galaxy Gun.

Preferably with Hoojib pilots.

I will see your Hoojibs and raise you a Star Destroyer with crew infected by the Crimson Forever. :o)

Jim

If you require more signatures for the anti Sun Crusher petition, you know where to find me.

But if we are not being entirely serious, I would like to see some ewoks in Spacetrooper armor.

I ordered myself X-Wing today (with a few expansions) and thought I'll check the forums regarding some of the unavailable models. Happy to see that Wave 1 is being reprinted and ready for May.

Then I saw this thread and went "There will be even bigger ships?!". Personally I think there is no need to go any bigger than the Millienium Falcon or Slave 1.

The biggest ship that might be possible would be a corellian corvette. But even that would be very large (and maybe only usable as some kind of mission objective). Other problem, there is no Imperial counterpart to it. And changing scales would be lame.

Personally I doubt we will get any capital ships.

Exactly why people should not use the term Large ships to mean something different than how it is defined in the game rules. It's misleading.
