WHY should we have a third faction?

By Norsehound, in X-Wing

from past experience when any developers stats something point blank there's always a catch, and for this game (seeing how FFG deals with WH40k RPG) the *wink wink* announcement would most likely be a SW dog fighting game set in another timeline which uses this game system.

though i doubt it would be anytime soon since X-wing's quite a new game

FYI, This was brought up at Star Wars weekend during a discussion panel. The Question was "Will we see more factions like a Republic and Separatist?" The answer was No. They also elaborated that they will go into the EU, which they already have done, and that the game will only ever be Rebel vs Empire. Some of the FFG guys were talking about 30 some ships in the entire game.

@Moose,

I have played those multiplayer games. They go exactly like you described. We added additional rules to move game play along and balance it out.

Hallelujah! I think something over looked or misunderstood with the addition of factions is what it improves. People point to 40k and say additional factions improves or adds excitement to the game. It does not do this to the gameplay. It adds complexity to the gameplay and makes entry into the game more daunting and makes playing the game more and more an exercise in rote memorization of the many factions you may come up against and what they can do so that planning every move becomes a crap shoot where just playing to move the game along is the better option than agonizing and asking your opponent what that piece does for the umteenth time.

Adding faction makes the METAgame more exciting and better. That is why 40k does it. 40k is a terrible game and it is designed that way. They make the model, then they think up rules to fit the model. They release new armies intentionally OP to get sales, then they scale them back in the next update. The rules are not created for balance which is why some factions are universally agreed as better than others and why only certain builds are entertained. If your game is terrible, then make your METAgame grand. 40k does this well. That is why they have tons of novels, fluff, campaign books etc.

X-wing is a good game. IT should concentrate on keeping good gameplay. The METAgame has crazy support just from the EU and the films. As long as they release new upgrades and pilots, they will keep the METAgame fresh because there isn't a single dominating build. The game will stay fresh as long as you have fresh configurations. For those that find the quant ultimate build and only play it, it will get stale. Those guys do that to themselves. Leave them to it or to go to 40k where they can be conned into buying a new OP army when their last one gets NERFED by codex creep.

FFG surely realizes how successful they are with this and knows that a large part of that is from people who don't play miniatures games. Sure, many may have never heard of them and those people probably only bought the core game anyway, because they don't frequent shops that sell the ships and they don't care enough about a 'board game' to research it on the internet. To those other non-mini players that play x-wing (as I suspect many are), they know about 40k and other games and THEY DON'T PLAY them for a reason. They like the simplicity of 2 factions that share almost all abilities, the short learning curve to play, the lack of modelling needed to play and the reasonable price (compared to any hobby). They will risk these and the other non-mini's players if they go the traditional route.

This is the first game I have played where I am actively seeking out tourneys to play in (and having no luck so if anyone knows where some info is for that, it is appreciated).

Before anyone calls me an outsider, I have been playing 40k since 3rd edition and had 3 armies at my peak, so there's that. It just isn't a fun game and it took me a while to pinpoint it. It wasn't til I started working on games in general that I figured it out. I have also played board games and historical mini's games since the mid 90's.

lol.....Well I stand corrected...Ffg will do what they want and when they want...The sky is the limit as to what they will release next...Looking forward to the next mystery release...Never give up , Never surrender...

Let's not forget that FFG is a business with the goal of generating profit. If they have released 12 ships already after 1 year and only have 30 planned, they will be done of everything they have planned before Episode VII is released.

Now think about that. A for-profit company would turn their back to making piles of money off of a product-line that will be immensely popular with movies to bolster its popularity? I doubt that. I would be surprised if they didn't continue producing this and expanding it as long as it remains profitable. We all know that those of you complaining that you do not want alternative factions would still buy it.

That's like Apple saying "we only planned 1 iPhone, why would we want to make another?"
