Other World Encounters Question - Explored Marker

By Vanno, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

If you are in the "left" section of an Other World and in the Other World Encounter Phase, you draw a Gate Card that sends you back to an Arkham Location that happen to have a gate marker on it (i.e. it is not the location you entered the gate in the 1st place), do you still get an Explored Marker and could you use it to close that gate as you could normally do?

1 Clue token for the 1st person to answer :-)

Cheers! Sylvain

As i know, you get explored marker after returning from Other world no matter how.

The exception is the gate box which explicitly allows returning through any open gate.

If an otherworld encounter returns you to a location with an open gate to a different other world, you'll immediately enter the gate at that location.

Sorry,I think i must reread my rulebook.

That's not correct. If you return to a different location (regardless if there's an open gate or not) you don't get an Explored Marker.

If an otherworld encounter returns you to a location with an open gate to a different other world, you'll immediately enter the gate at that location.

Wouldn't say that's correct either. If the OW encounter says "return to Arkham" you get an explored marker.

The key distinction is if you "return to arkham" (where you get an explored counter) versus if you "move/go/are sent to xxx" (where you do not). So if you "return to arkham to any gate of your choice" you get an explored counter. If you "move to the black cave" you do not.

I believe you have to return through a Gate that goes to the Other World you were in, unless the card says otherwise.

You only get Explored Markers by returning to a Gate that goes to the Other World you are returning from, unless the card returning you says otherwise.

There are a few incorrect statements on this thread. So let's reiterate facts:

  • If a card tells you to return to Arkham , you must return to a location that has a gate matching your current OW space. If there is more than one, you can choose which of the two locations you return to regardless of where you originally entered. Receive Explored marker.
  • If a card tells you to return to Arkham and there is no corresponding gate open, you are Lost in Time and Space. Do not receive Explored Marker.
  • If a card allows you, such as the Gate Box, you may return to any open gate. If the card states return to Arkham , you receive an Explored marker.
  • If a card says "move to" or any other form of movement without saying "return to Arkham," you must follow the directions. Do not receive an Explored marker.

The only stipulations to receive an Explored marker is that

  1. You are "returned" to Arkham and not moved by any other way
  2. There is an open gate (whether a specific one or your choice depends on the card).

You do not gain an Explored marker if

  1. There is verbiage other than "return to Arkham"
  2. You move to LiTaS first
  3. The effect moving you specifically states something different.
  4. The only exception I am aware of is when a Nightgaunt moves you from the OW. The words "return" are not on the monster token but the FAQ allows to grab an Explored marker anyway.

Thanks you all - those are subtle differences. Move to and Return to is not the same.
