Someone needs to be fired for this "great" idea. Give me a nice felt mat with a starfield any day.
I bought a 3x3 felt mat from Michael's for $3. Works like a champ.

Another concern I have with the tiles is how durable the artwork is on the surface. We've had complaints from players about the artwork rubbing off of the maneuver dial with usage and if they're using the same process for the boards I can see this happening with repeated usage to the side that is down on the table.
This is a valid point…
after years and years of going through paper hex map terrain for other games, my group had gotten to the point where we would cut down the "offical" printed maps and had them laminated which gave us 8.25" x 10.75" map boards. Til we stared playing playing on war gaming terrain we generally had to purchase two copies of each hexpack just so we would have the un-modified originals around.
I am talking about constant play during my late teens through my mid twenties; where we would play all day and night Thursday through Sunday, then sometimes pull seven day marathon sessions. It would take some heavy gaming to wear these boards out, I think, and more than likely they would be used for tournament play by FFG.
All costs aside, there is nothing wrong with having custom battlemats for gameplay along with "offically" printed materials. Eventually I would get tired looking at the same set of stars/nebulea/planets/ect.; Besides, having the ablilty to change them up depending on the senario, seems like a good idea.
What a pack of whingers that have come out of the woodwork to criticize this product. You haven't even seen it in real life yet so what's with all the hating?
As for the price point - if you are into board games or mini gaming, then you know that you have spent more on worse in the past. It's what we do. We spend a tonne of money on our hobby and we regret some of it and love others parts.
I like the look of it and will probably buy it but will reserve judgement until I've seen, handled and played on it.

This is the internet, who does such things?
