Evade and Focus - When/Why use Evade

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing

Hi everyone,
Okay, I've only played one game so don't beat me up…
Is there a reason to take Evade?
Evade equals one guaranteed Evade.
Focus let's you change ALL focus to Evade.
What would be the advantage to taking Evade and when should it be used?
Thank you,

When you really don't / or can't afford to be hit, at least you have a guaranteed evade. Focus only works if you roll eyeballs.

Using a focus action towards your agility depends completely upon rolling focus with your dice. If you don't roll any focus or evade, you'll take all damage regardless of your focus action. Although, if you choose focus action and roll severl focus on the dice you can use your action if you like and avoid whatever damages were canceled out.

Selecting an evade action relies on nothing but your choice to use it. An evade action is a guaranteed nullifier for one hit.

I have always focused, but I might start to evade if I am in a tight spot and on the defensive.

The Falcon has 1 Agility. If you spend the 1 point to use the title, you can use the evade action. Using that action artifically bumps the Falcon up to two agility.

There's a lot to making the choice about Focus or Evade. If I have a ship that can't shoot at anything that turn, then I'll evade. I might also pick evade when my opponent cares Proton torpedoes or some missiels (not the Homming Missiles). I've seen missile with 4 hits completely evaded before. Can't do that if you have 3 agility and focus. Most of the time your going to pick Focus, but there are times when evade is good.

I've played less than 10 games, and I don't know how often it would have come up, but for some reason i thought (and subsequently taught my playgroup) that if you spend a focus token you only get to modify a single die, not all of them. Re-reading that section of the rulebook, it clearly says to modify all of them. This will make games more interesting.

The general rule is if you might take a shot, choose focus. If you're likely to be shot at more than twice, choose focus. If you're not going to get a shot off and you won't be shot more than twice, then evade is better.

Obviously there are lots of factors which can modify this decision (how many defense die, the cost of taking a hit (eg stealth device lost, or last hull point lost), but the above are good guidelines.

Quick and Dirty

Evade is only useful when you get shot at, but it is generally more useful defesivly than a focus action.

Focus can be used for either attack of defense, and it is the only offesive action that most TIEs have.

More Extensive

It get's a little bit more complicated than that. First I find that If some of my TIEs Focus and others Evade, then my opponant will just fire and those that Focused. So it is often useful, especially in the early stages of the game, to be consistant across the squadron. All Evade or all Focus. However I sometimes use Evade to discourige attacks against a spacific target. Often times Howelrunner will evade while her wingmen will focus to descourige attacks against my more expensive TIE.

Also YT-1300 piloted by Han Solo upgraded with the title Milenium Falcon. I evade very action. Han Solo's ability is better than focus for attack (it is basically a poor man's lock on, but it works against any ship) Evade does not stop the Falcon from being hit at all, but it does keep damage down to a minumum and it can take the rest.

I have spent more time flying ties than x wings and I usualy choose evade at range 3 and focus at range 1 and 2.

I use the evade token on every action for the falcon when flying Han. It takes one hit off of every shot, thereby keeping you in the fight for a few more rounds.

I also have taken it when I was flying a damaged B.H. against two damaged O.R.S. It allowed me to minimize the damage taken and take both of them out leaving me with 1 hit left on my hull.

Firstly hello and welcome, I'm still learning too but my choice on what to use comes down to can I shoot back vs do I want this guy to survive so he might be able to shoot next round? It's a hard call to make and both options can go against you.

I always take an evade when flying against a large ship with gunner. I try to keep it to one damage if I'm not rolling all evades. I believe in taking focus but there are times where I know I'm taking fire and that for sure evade is what I'm counting on.
