Had a bad thought the other day, which was as follows; could it be viable to run two firesprays, one with the Ion Canon and the other with the HLC? My logic is that the Ion Canon would help prevent other ships from moving outside of the HLC range. The downside is that there is probably zero room for any other fighters.
Ion Canon *and* Heavy Laser Canon
My big question would be why bother? If you can catch the enemy with the ion you should be able to catch it with the HLC shouldn’t you? While knowing where the enemy will be is always useful I find it to be at its most potent when used to set up range one kill shots. That wouldn’t matter with this build as secondarys don’t get range modifiers and the HLC can’t shoot that close anyway, not that you’d want to as the primary has the same dice without the “no crits” penalty. Though it might work defensivly to keep you’re more expensive and damaging firespray in the fight longer.
As an experiment here's a build that uses that idea, just for fun.
