Just a fluke game, or decent build?

By Deadshane, in X-Wing

Today I played my regular opponent….whom I never beat. I was something like 1 win 10 losses against him.

I wanted to get a quick game in and told him I was just going to take "crap" that I wanted to see in action. I was amazed when I beat him.

Lando

-Nin Numb

-Expose

-Sheild Mod

-Luke Skywalker

-Millinium Falcon and Concussion missle upgrade to eat points

Biggs

-Stealth Device

- +Agility R2 unit

-Proton Torp

He had

4 X Interceptor

1 Tie fighter…maybe howlrunner/or Dark Curse possibly

Basically, keep Biggs close as the wingman. Expose lowers the falcon to 0 agility but you have to shoot at biggs' 4-5 defense dice. Try to get green maneuvers with the Falcon as well to give biggs the focus orders.

Somehow it worked like a dream! I managed to kill off all 5 fighters with the falcon ending the 2 hour battle with 1 hit point left and biggs down one sheild and the stealth device. (at the 1 hour mark….for tournament results…I killed off enough points for the total victory and had only lost 6 hit points off of the falcon)

I asked my friend if he thought the build was good….he said he absolutley thought it was a poor build. He made the mistake of not taking out biggs early by going straight for him. Somehow…I don't think you can charge at biggs while there is a falcon with rocking expose at close range….and biggs may still even survive by keeping his distance/falcon between him and the opposing forces.

I think I want to try this again…but the wasting of points was a bit irritating to me with all the pointless missles. I'm thinking about trying it out with a tooled Solo/Skywalker/Chewie/Sheilds/Falcon/Expose, and Biggs/Stealth/R2D4.

No focus for Biggs next time but Solo is more self sufficient with the falcon upgrade, sheilds and Chewie. I may not need biggs for as long. You just need to take out a few fighters first before biggs goes down in flames.

So…how about this build? Han seems like a 2 Ship build if you bring any gear with him. That's the thing about the Falcon it seems, if it's going to be a solid ship you have a 2 ship build….which is really tough to do.

Was today a fluke or was the build a decent concept?

This was a 100 pt game played by tournament rules for initiative and asteroids btw….just for reference.

Thanks for any help. I'm really trying to better my game. We're playing something like 2 sessions weekly with 2+ games each session…somehow I simply cannot beat my regular opponent. (except on this one instance)

….his latest/greatest build is a dual firespray build with boba and Krassis. Krassis flying Slave one with a mine, missle and a torp…boba with a heavy cannon and Expert handling. (VERY little forward movement shenanigans) I thought torps would be enough to take out two large ships but no dice on that one. My falcon idea was in response to this….he just faced off against me with the fighters instead.

no offense, but i'd say fluke. TIE Interceptors absolutely hate the falcon. If it was a han build or w/e it's even worse. You can get away with something like a couple generic ones in a 6 TIE swarm with howlrunner, but a 4-5 ship build that is basically all interceptors just can't handle the faclon. Interceptors need to be elusive and tricky etc, not just go head to head. No hiding from the falcon. I don't see interceptors getting massively popular in tournaments unless some wacky wave 3 TIE bombers or B-wings or w/e does exceptionally well against the falcon and scares it out of the meta. In fact, the falcon is probably a bit overpowered at the moment in a tournament setting where the time limit becoms a huge factor in killing it. Firesprays at least can't ALWAYS shoot at something, and sometimes that happening once or twice saves a ship or two of yours and buys the extra few attacks to finish it. The falcon is just such guarunteed attrition that it often gets away with a couple hull left and 0 points for the opponent when time is called. I don't think I heard of/saw ANY falcon build that didn't finish in the top 5 or so at a regional, but i saw several 2 firespray builds or 1 + other ships near the bottom. Kind of an ot rant sorry :P

I guess there is a common theme here. I'm not saying the firespray is bad, I like it, and Hothie and a couple others have done well with it, but it much like those interceptors, are just more unforgiving of mistakes than their rebel counterparts. Interceptors are VERY high risk high reward against anything if you're playing almost exclusively them in your build.

In a tournament setting with those builds, he may have to just send it all at biggs and pray he only loses 1 TIE by the time he kills him, then run away to either regroup for a concentrated pass at the falcon, or take advantage of the clock and make faclon come to him through asteroids or something. The only true 2 ship build that seems to really be good is Han + Chewie, just becuase there's no "easy kill around".

i'm calling fluke.

the falcon is easy to kill, i really dont see how people are having such a hard time with it as an opponent. if you have at least 5 ships as an imp player it should be an easy target.

and your opponent was right, the first thing he should have done was focus fire biggs straight out of the picture, or manuever so that he could only have hit the falcon.

to me the best falcon builds have a y-wing or 2 or a y-wing with x-wing combo.

i find the firespray more useful, it can hit you 4 times at any range and has more agility.

pair it with a few fighters and it really becomes a nightmare.

The YT isn't easy to kill by any means. Especially against an experienced player. It was made to be a tank and it is a tank. And I'm not sure how the Firespray is the better ship when the YT has a 360 shot, more hull and more shields. Both ships have their strengths and weeknesses and both are very viable options in the right builds with good players flying them.

wrong-o

an experienced player should eat the falcon alive almost everytime, even with average rolls, even if they are playing against an experienced player.

players that have a large number of games under their belt wont be afraid or worried about the falcon…granted, people with that level of experience may be few and far between but its really not that great, especially in a 100 point setting.

Ok. Obviously you're much more experienced than the rest of us. You win.

I don't think it was legal for Biggs to be utilizing Stealth Device, as his upgrade bar does not include a pilot ability icon; it only specifies astromech and torpedoe upgrades.

Stealth Device isn‘t a pilot ability, it‘s a ship upgrade. Any ship can equip one upgrade if they have the points to pay for it.
