Upgrading and squadpoints

By LRAB, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I've bought the game a month or so back and have enjoyed playing it very much, though when playing I've come across some questions/problems that aren't answered in the rulebook.

1. How do I upgrade my ship? The rulebook says you can "purchase" upgrades but does not specify with what or how. A little extra read reveals that they can be bought through squadpoints, but does not tell how you get them or how many points you can have…

2. How do I get squadpoints, and how many can I have? I can't find any list in the rulebook that states how many points one has.

I'm still fairly new to the game so excuse me if i'm asking simple questions.

Points are determined at the beginning of the game by the players. So - with your friends for a casual game, you can decide on how many points you want to play - Usually both sides agree on the same amount of points - you can use them to handicap one side by giving less points to just that one side.

For tournament play - the current standard is 100 points. The pointcost of upgrades and ships is in the bottom right hand corner.

There is an upgrade bar at the bottom of each ship that shows what kind of upgrades it can take - that icon is on each of the upgrade cards… (Upgrades are cards such as determination, or an R2 astromech or proton torpedoes.

Thank you very much, I had a sneaking suspision that it would work that way.

There are upgrades and modifications. You only get them all by buying the expansion packs and applying them to your decks. If you are playing just the core set, you generally play 31-34 points, you decide with your opponent. The more ships you have, the more points you can apply. You can't play 100 points with the core set…but people I play with usually want to play 40, 60, 80, and most common is 100 points (I've seen 120 and 200 before, but that is a Very long game…), however, we all have a lot of ships…With those points, you pick a ship and assign a pilot. The bottom of the pilot card has upgrade abilities, the middle shows the action upgrades you can apply each turn, and there is either a pilot skill written or a summary of the squad you've chosen. You can only apply what it shows at the bottom (unless otherwise specified by another card, I.E. Slave-1 Title, which also allows a proton torpedo [i believe], which is not in the upgrade bar at the bottom). Add it all up and don't exceed the point limit you've set with your opponent. You can also apply 1 modification to any ship, such as shield upgrade or stealth upgrade if you have the points to do it. Only 1 modification and 1 title is allowed per ship. So far, only the YT-1300 and Firespray have title cards, so I wouldn't worry about titles too much.

I hope that helps! Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions (I still do here and there…).
