Regional Rules

By KickinAces, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So no idea if this is the right location for this post or not, but wanted to get some opinions. I have been researching regionals in my area and contacted the stores. When I asked for information, one store is charging $15 and others $10. Is there any set fee by FFG? Just seems odd to me.

More importantly was the time frame they gave. Games are set for 50 minutes. Is this allowed?? From what I read in the tournament rules, games must be 60 minutes. I know it can be changed as long as players are told in advance, but can they really cut it to under 60 minutes? In my experiences, it can be difficult to finish a game in 60 minutes, let alone 50.

Thanks for any and all opinions

75 min then optionally ranging between 60 to 90 is the standard tourney rules.

As far as attendance fees I can only say this there is no suggested fee set by FFG, but they do charge whoever is running the event 175USD for the regional kit.

Let me guess… FTW Games? 50 minutes is outside the parameters set in the official tourney rules. I also heard they are using non-standard scoring.

It is the one in Janesville, WI. They had to switch the original date from the 27th to the 28th. Is this (shorter time) something that FFG would have approved? I am thinking of contacting FFG as it doesn't seem right that the games are less than the recommended time. Do not want it to be discovered and somehow the regional not officially count. It is a decent trip for me to make for them not to follow official rules.

As far as entry fees go, the venue is free to do as they see fit. I think many places are only looking to recoup the cost of the Regionals kit, which is $175, I think. The two we've attended so far were $10 preregister, $15 at the door, and a straight up $20 entry. I think both were able to get back their cost with a small margin of profit. One of them, however, provided significant extra prize support out of pocket. And I think there is one in the area next weekend that is entirely free to enter. So it is really all over the board.

Round timing is specified in the tournament rules, and 50 minutes falls outside the leeway given for official play. I seriously doubt that FFG would have approved the change, if the venue ever actually contacted them. I could be wrong. I know there is at least one other location besides Janesville that has announced not only shorter round timing, but also non-standard scoring. I think FFG should be made aware that these locations are not following the tournament rules. I don't think FFG is going to disallow the results and revoke the invite to Worlds, but maybe the venues will be blacklisted from hosting future events. Unfortunately this may not be much of a punishment to those who do not really care about the development of this game. I probably would not attend an event that stated they would not follow tournament rules.

Unless this is the only event you can get to, I'd wait for one of the Regionals in June. It looks like there are 3 more in the general area.

FTW games stated wierd time and scoring on their website, but the TO was obviosly not the one to post that on their website, as he was confused by the question and ran standard scoring 75 min matches.

Good fun was had by most.

Glad it worked out that way!
