Stoormtroper: Encumbrance

By Yepesnopes, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

As per RAW, are stormtroopers encumbered? or am I doing something wrong?

Stormtroopers are equipped with

Blaster Rifle: enc. 4

Vibroknife: enc. 1

3x Frag grenade: enc. (3x)1 = 3

Stormtrooper armour: enc. 4( -3 ?) = 1

Utility belt and extra reloads: enc. 0?

Total enc. : 9

Max enc. : 5 + brawn (3) = 8

Does it mean that stormtrooper always have a set back dice to all Agility and Brawn checks?

In that case, I guess it won't neither hurt removing 1 frag grenade from the equipment.

Cheers,

Yepes

Utility belt adds 1 to encumcrance capacity - although extra reloads have a 1 enc weight, so that still leaves 1 additional enc… I think.

Let me re-check.

EDIT: Their total encumbrance is 10 - as extra reloads have an encumbrance of 1, blaster rifle is 4, 3x1 for grenades, vibro-knife is 1 and armour is 4-3 so 1 = 10. Their total encumbrance capacity is 9 = 5 + brawn + utility belt. Not that I'd apply this penalty, but you are correct I think.

These are minions, so the squad as a whole is gonna have plenty. Maybe reduce the grenades to 1/trooper. Or, conversely, any trooper squad as a whole can only make 3 grenade attacks.

Like I said, these are minions, so I don't think their encumbrance value is much of a concern. Besides, I can't imagine a minion group of stormtroopers going up against PCs is ever gonna live to make 3 grenade attacks per trooper. My bigger concern would be letting the PCs get their hands on all those grenades.

That has puzzled me since RCR. Why do bottom end stormtroopers carry grenades in all the statblocks? where in the EU did that come from? I don't think I've ever seen a stormtrooper in the movies throw a grenade. Yet my players always think I'm cheating them if I say these stormies had no grenades in their belt.

Clone troopers on the other hand have been shown to throw grenades plenty of times.

I don't think it is enormously out of character for soldiers to carry grenades (certainly, the Stormtrooper classes do in the Battlefront video games). And especially Stormtroopers, given that so much of what they do is terrifying civilians - throwing a grenade in to crowded room full of refugees frex.

It's an EU thing, and may even have started with WEG.

The stormtrooper article on Wookieepedia lists the grenade as being a thermal detonator, with a specially coded storage cannister that only the trooper wearing the armor knew the combination, with the specific intent to keep those explosives out of Rebel hands.

The main source cited is the New Essential Guide to Weapons & Technology, which itself probably drew from several EU sources.

Personally, I've mentally house-ruled the grenade listing to "one per trooper" since stormtroopers are utlimately disposable mooks in comparison to the PCs in most Star Wars games.

For sure, it… might be a WEG thing. Imp Sourcebook details that Standard Stormtroopers in WEG rules never carried grenades. However, most of the variants did carry concussion grenades (Snowtroopers, Scout Troopers, and their creations, the Zero-G Trooper, and Aquatic Trooper. How we got from some stormtrooper variants going from concussion grenades to standard stormtroopers carrying thermal detonators is beyond me.

In the rewordings a charcter's catch phrase from Song of Ice & Fire…

"The EU is strange and full of screwiness."

Since I am new to this, what EU stands for? For sure it is not Europena Union! burla

Expanded Universe: Comics, computer games, novels and so on not considered "movie canon" or made/written by Lucas himself.

Thanks!
