What is the difference between crest and trait?

A trait is at the top of the text box, in bold italics.
A crest is at the bottom right of the card, and can be two crossed swords (war), a chalice (holy), a ring (noble), or a book (learned)…(don't have the time or patience at the moment to insert images).
If something blanks the text box of a card in play, unless it says otherwise, it will blank the traits as well… however, there is nothing currently in the card pool that blanks crests.
You can also have some smoke grey thing for shadow cards (those will have an S in their cost).
In short, even thought Crests and Traits serve the same function (allowing card interaction without meaning anything in and of themselves), crests are not open to the same level of manipulation that traits are.
There are a few cards that give crests and one that removes war crests. Other than that, no way to manipulate crests.
