Ok I'm hooked …

By dhrocks, in X-Wing

Subject says it all. I've played the boxed set and I really enjoy this game.

Could someone please give me some advice on what to purchase next? I don't want to go nuts, but having atleast a few ships each side would make the missions more interesting.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the addiction. You might like to read something I wrote just recently, and see if you feel the same:

In terms of what to buy next, it really depends on what you want to do, ie: do you need to be buying ships from both sides, or do you have a mate (or group of people), who are going to be buying one faction and you're buying the other?

That will give us the greatest chance of answering you; whether you need to build a balanced set from both sides, or just one of them.

I would definitely want to purchase forces for both sides. My wife and son play with me, so at the end of the day we'd need to cover both factions.

I don't want to go nuts and buy too many either. I'd say if you could provide an outline of purchasing say 3-4 more ships to flesh out some bigger games that would be appreicated.

PS - your write up is excellent. Nice to see another Aussie playing this game.

another x-wing and a tie advance is a good place to start.

Get a TIE Advanced, it's very useful for the Imperial side, and it comes with Darth Vader, which is fun.

You probably want to get an X-Wing and a TIE Fighter, too, since they come with different (and good) pilot and upgrade cards than the core set. Having another of both ship types is really useful: Imperials need lots of TIE Fighters on the board to balance out the more powerful Rebel ships; and there are some great combos that can be used with two X-Wings (see Biggs with Wedge).

Besides those, there are the Y-Wing, A-Wing, TIE Interceptor, Slave I and Milennium Falcon. The A-Wing and the TIE Interceptor are sold out pretty much everywhere right now, so you may as well not bother trying to buy those for the time being. The Falcon is probably the most fun, although since it's a big ship, it costs more than the smaller ship expansions. The Y-Wing is nice, and it opens up some interesting combos with your X-Wings, and the Slave I comes with some great upgrades (and some neat bombs that only it can use), but you'll probably get the most out of the Falcon for right now. I'd recommend that if your budget allows it.

Hope that helps!

It sounds like you're an Aussie, so you might have already paid $45, $55 or even $65 for the starter set if you went the retail route.

I'd recommend getting a second starter set posted to you for $35-ish (post free) from Book Depository - www.bookdepository.co.uk

This will give you double of everything, including dice, measuring sticks, etc, which is always useful.

I'd then get a TIE Advanced, giving you Darth Vader, and a Y-Wing for some Rebel variety.

If you wanted to go beyond that, I'd recommend a TIE Interceptor and an A-Wing, for each faction.

At which stage you'd have four TIES, a TIE Interceptor and TIE Advanced versus two X-Wings, a Y-Wing and an A-Wing.

You could have some MIGHTY match ups with that (not neccessarily using all the ships, all the time, either).

Then, if you were really loving it, look at the Millennium Falcon and Slave I additions… $40 at Aussie retail, but about $26 (post free) from Book Depository (when they're in stock).

Good to see more Aussies on here. From the core set I went out and got a TIE Interceptor and an A-Wing, mostly because that's what my closest retail store had on hand. Now I wish I had just got another core set, which will be my next purchase, and wanting to get an extra X-Wing and TIE Fighter too for the extra cards, and keen to get myself a Falcon.

The extra core set will be handy to have enough dice, and so each side can have it's own templates.

BTW, which part of Australia are you guys from? I'm in WA.

PS Morrissey, nice write-up and thanks for the link. Getting someone to play against is the hardest part for me ATM and the only reason I haven't sunk more money into it yet.

good advice posted here already.

i started with two starter sets. from there i bought a booster pack of each base ship (tie-fighter, tie-advanced, y-wing, x-wing). this gives you all the extra pilots you will need. you will eventually buy two of every expansion but to start id recommend just the extra starter set.

wave2 gives you lots more options (Falcon, Slave1, intercepter, A-Wing), probably just as important as the ships themselves you get extra upgrades not available in wave1.

it really depends on how much u want to spend. from wave1 id say two extra tie-fighter expansion packs and two extra x-wing expansions would be a priority after the 2nd core set. This will give u a chance to try out all of the new x-wing/tie pilots for each faction before getting into Y-Wings and Advanced Tie-fighters. You can get these in time, when funds permit. Id buy just a single booster of these until i had tried them out. Same with the fighters from wave2 (intercepter and A-Wing). Just get one of each new expansion to try them out. they all come with interesting upgrades which add to the fun (but also complexity) of the game by giving you more options.

Yesterday i splashed out and bought a second Falcon and Second Slave1. both of these can be flown in multiples and they contain several upgrades like Engine Upgrade and Stealth which are not available in other expansions. Right now i own 2 starter sets, two of every expansion ship and a total of 3 tie-intercepters. i was interested in specific builds and combinations of ships and wanted to have maximum flexibility. i own 6 ties, not 8, as im not intersted in playing an 8 ship swarm, same reason i only own 2 A-wings and 3 intercepters.

Buy smart. Get what you like to play. Invest in a 2nd core set first. Test out expansion ships before you buy multiples. Have fun!

Wow thanks everyone.

I hadn't consdiered buying a 2nd core set, but now that has been explained, it makes a lot of sense. I might just pick up one of those and an extra ship for either side. That should keep me busy.

Thanks again everyone!

If you buy core sets for a quantity of Tie-Fighters, you'll probably miss a very interesting ability card wich comes e.g. with the Tie-Fighter expention: Swarm tactics

Start with an extra core set. That will give you 2 x-wings and 4 tie fighters to learn dogfighting skills with along with double dice, templates, rulers, cards, each side's own damage deck. After that I would recomend only wave 1 expansions in the following order.

X-wing: because 4 on 2 are stacked odds and you will get Wedge and Garven as pilots which will really change up your squad abilities and tactics

Tie Advanced: Vader. With missiles. 'Nuff said.

Y-wing: Tank of a ship with good upgrade cards and pilot abilities. Using an Ion cannon on ships will change your squad tactics again.

Tie Fighter: howlrunner, backstabber. Pilots to add to your tie fleet and give it an edge from all the upgrades and abilities that the Rebels have gotten up to this point

When you've played with all of wave 1, I would go for a Slave 1 first for wave 2. The options and the strategies that open up with bombs, crew members, turrets, modifications make it a must have for your fleet.

Then I would go for the Millenium Falcon to balance the large ship for each side.

A-wing: a zippy craft that opens up maneuvering with the new boost action

Tie Intercepter: a zippy craft that opens up maneuvering with the new boost action. Soontir fel has the craziest upgrade card combo with Push the Limit (PTL).

And if you want more ties and x-wings I recommend core sets. as you get 3 minis for 40 bucks which is cheaper than buying 3 individual minis. but yet you will want at least one tie and one x-wing for the pilots and cards. Also the y-wings give you additional R2 droids you can use.
