Which decks to get first for 3 - player?

By dshammer, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi,

we mainly intend to play this game in multiplayer mode and try to see whether we like it… can you recommend us two expansions to add to the core game in order to find that out?

Just the base game probably wont be enough to get a fair view of the game.

Thx a lot!

play a few games with core x2, then get house expansions.

If you want a balanced play experience (and you do), get a number of house expansions equal to the number of players you have. If you will be playing primarily 3-player games, get 3 house expansions. I'd recommend Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon; Targ is a little more complicated, so if you're just starting out, that may be the one to avoid.

Ok thanks for the replies… I guess I get the the three house expansions first, then the core 2x and then the tale of champions packs - depending on whether I like the game or not of course :) .

Be aware!!!! The expansions don't come with Valar Morghulis or Wildfire Assault!!! I always make sure to note that. Go to CardGameDB.com and search for those cards in the card search for Thrones. You'll most likely want to proxy them at some point.

Ok we really like the game so we are going to get one core and three deluxe expansions.

Just one more question: we are not sure which house expansions to get for a competitive 3-player game. we definitely take stark and targaryen, but we got the feeling lannister is a bit weak in a 3-player game, as their control cards only affect one card, but you have two opponents you have to control.

does this change with the house expansion? which houses do you recommend for 3-player games?

I you have one core set, and then each player has access to one deluxe expansion, Stark, Baratheon, and Lannister respectively, a solid deck can be built out of house Lannister for sure.

The interesting thing for your playgroup will be deciding who gets the cards that work well in any house; there are event cards, neutral characters, etc., in the deluxe expansions that could work well in many different decks.

If you want to get good at the game, take things slowly. I would recommend just getting one core set, and then, when you play, randomly choose decks, and play that core set to death…until you know every card and every deck and are bored out of your mind (which might not be possible; I would have fun doing that even now), and then add new cards and start making custom decks slowly.

Thanks for the quick replies, really helpful community here.

We finally ordered one Core and in an amazing turn of events deluxe expansions for Targaryen, Baratheon and Lannister :) .

In the end, we didnt like two things about House Stark: The first is the "Lethal Counterattack" card, which in our view was really the strongest card in core. It completely obliterated two armies in two games in a row, and losing 4 characters to a single low cost event is a very frustating experience which in our view isnt met by any other card. Later expansions with anti-event cards might balance that out, but in core I think it is very strong.

The other thing was more practical: It requires a lot of counting, all these +1 for all characters, +1 for each winterwolves, +2 when defending etc. just took quite long. Add to that the +3 multiplayer titles and having to recalculate everything because we forget the attacker had stealth or something :) .
