If I have a shield on a character and I play You're My Only Hope, can I choose to have the character be destroyed, or does the shield kick in automatically and save the character even if I want it to be sacrificed?

The Shield only protects against actual damage and focus, only protects against enemy effects/attacks and is optional.

Concur with this response; shield does not protect from a sacrifice, but rather from damage and focus tokens from opponent.
