Innsmouth Spoilers...sort of

By JerusalemJones, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

The latest issue of Game Trade Magazine has a full page ad for the new Innsmouth Horror expansion, and here are a few things o be gelaned from what I can see of the game pieces:

Two of the new investigators are shown, and one looks just like Calvin Wright (and it appears he has a "fish hand" on his shoulder, but that could just be my imagination).

The other investigator is a blond woman playing the violin. I wonder if she is related to Julia Brown, the violinist in the current CoC lcg expansion block.

There are no new Outer Worlds. Instead, there appears to be some sort of track -- I think this might refer to the new Reef mechanic.

Each "location" in Innsmouth has a modifier underneath the location circle. This obviously also deals with one of the two new machnics (either the Reef or the Innsmouth Look).

There is also a new creature color -- white or grey. This is the border of the Child of Ib monster (hoping I remembered that right -- I don't have the ad in front of me right now).

And, as wel already know, Bokrug is in the game. They showed the back of two other "Ancient One" cards, but I am not familiar enough with the mythos to identify them. And both of the Heralds are said to be "the toughest the game has ever seen (paraphrased quote)."

May can not come fast enough.

I assume you mean May 2010 ;-)

Thanks for the heads-up, JJ. I went out and bought the issue myself, and I can throw in a few more details for those who haven't yet seen it.

First, the white-bordered Being of Ib has no awareness modifier, just a slash where one should be. However he moves, it appears you can't evade or sneak past him.

The other monster displayed is a red-bordered Proto-Shoggoth, with -2 Awareness. In the Mythos Proto-Shoggoths are far more intelligent than normal Shoggoths.

It isn't just the locations which have modifers; each visible street area also has a modifier. I was wondering how they were going to decide when an Investigator in Innsmouth has to draw an Innsmouth Look card and now I think I have my answer. I would assume that each turn you roll a die, apply the modifer of wherever you are, and if you score too low, you have to draw an Innsmouth Look card (I think low rather than high because the Grocery and Hotel locations both have a +1 modifier; the one unstable location I can see has a -1 modifier).

Yes, there are indeed new unstable locations in Innsmouth.

There is a Sinister Plot of Bokrug's displayed which appears very interesting; it is all Ancient One Attacks and text, which some of the best Sinister Plots are. From the wording, I honestly believe that if this Sinister Plot comes up, the Investigators win!

The other Ancient One is like a towering tree of gray flesh with tentacles coming out all over; can anyone identify that one?

I'm not sure if the last card is a Sinister Plot card, or one of the Small Dust cards; I think it is the latter, as it appears to show a man turning to dust.

What is this Reef mechanic you mentioned, JJ? Where did you get information on that?

As for the other posters, I would remind them that BGotW came out on time, and it appears that Innsmouth has already hit the printers. It might well be out in May as they say.

My only worry is that too many expansion specific rules will limit the usefullness of the "mega game" that so many people enjoy. It might just mean running more investigators though to keep the new game mechanics in check in Innsmouth..

In response to the "towering tree of grey flesh" I am inclinded to say that it would be Zoth-Ommog, what with it being a Yha-Nthlei, more Cthulhu themed expansion. I can't seem to find a picture, but if you have the CoC book, Malleus Monstrorum, then look it up, or better yet the main rule book.

The towering tree of flesh sounds a lot like the one pictured here: http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=405

And yes, to me it looks Zoth-Ommogy, too. Especially the under-section that resembles a cone.

I think it is Zoth-Othmog, too.

Yes, it is indeed the same picture. Same with the other picture being the Being of Ib.

Have my doubts about it being zoth-ommog, it is described as having a reptilian head with a mane of tentecles.

where as the twin monstrosities of Zhar and Lloigor seem to be more in line with the picture

Can you see the names of any of the streets or locations? If so, what are they?

16 investigators? ****.

I'm glad we're getting unstable locations again.

IH I think would pack the most content out of all other expansions.

But playing with 3 extra boards would require a custom-made table me thinks....

When does this come out?

It is slated for a May release.

So, does anyone have a scan of this ad that we can look at?

"May release" rotflmao!

Sorry, no pun intended. According the product page, it's due to hit the stores in May. It's at the printers now. :P

yes, although Arkham and other FFG products have been released several months later than initial projections, I get the feeling those days are gone and this will arrive closer on time. But well see...

On the topic of spoilers, sort of, the contents listing for the game reveals that there will be Zhar and Ghatanathoa as GOOs in addition to Bokrug.

I suppose they could be the 2 heralds (the Guardians had lots of their own chits) but I doubt that.

Based on previous thread speculations, the Heralds for Innsmouth may well be Dagon and Hydra with complementary effects.

I'd love to know more of the monsters though I guess at least 16 of the 32 will be somewhat fishy.

Best, squidnibble
