Asteroids!

By RedFive, in X-Wing

hey everybody, RedFive here!
well this gameis fan-freeking-tastic! i love it, and play as frequently as possible.

i came up with a new house rule that is going to bring many of you back to way back in the day.

who here remebers the game asteroids… your tiny ship set upon in a field of hurling rocks, blasting big rocks into tiny rocks… and a occasional alien craft swooping through to balst you from behind when yer busy making space dust! this game was one of the first video games ever. i do not know how many quarters i lost to that one armed bandit.

well you can have this experience on the tabletop too, during a dog fight….OH LORD.

remember the first time you sat in the theater during empire strikes back, with all yer snacks, eyes wide in fear as the millenium falcon is pursued relentlessly through the asteroid field… "NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS!"

house rules:

i own two core sets so i gots lots of asteroids.

start with only the largest on the table… ships can now shoot each other or obstacles. when a large asteroid is hit by 2 hits from a ship, it now breaks into 2 seperate asteroids of medium size. and when a medium sized asteroid is hit by 1 hit from a ship, it will thus split into 2 smaller asteroids, so on and so fourth , till they are the small size. small asteroids can be shot and destroyed ( removed from the table).

you thought it was over? oh no, we were just getting started.

the asteroids also move. your ships move, why not have the asteroids move to… unless its a huge one that has its own gravity, and ecco-system of space cave worms(this is a possible senario!)

asteroids move in the end phase. using the 2 < ^ > templates. if a asteroid bounces into you or overlaps you….well there are already rules that cover this, so i do not have to make any up.whew!

have fun and….

LOOK OUT!

I like the idea of blasting the Asteroids to make smaller ones, or finally ridding them altogether if they are already reduced in size.

The part I don't like is the arbitary movement of the asteroids during the end step. This sidestep's the player's ability to make predictions and maneuver accordingly. Several ways to rectify this: 1. Have the asteroids move in the same direction from beginning of game to end. 2. Have the asteroids stay stationary, even when blasted. A more complex version might be having the Asteroids move in one steady direction until they are blasted and then that direction is adopted from the direction of the shooter. Depending on the size of the rock, dictates the speed template used…..large rocks use shorter straight templates, while small rocks use larger straight templates.

i like that idea. hey this is evolveing, nothing i make up is set in stone…. i am just here to contribute some fun ideas.

Consider putting an arrow sticker on asteroids to show the direction the are moving. You can use a scatter dice with arrow to randomize the direction when placing them down and after the get blasted. They should move continue move straight if nothing interferes with them. Loop them around to enter from opposite side of game mat if they leave the game mat.

i think the direction arrow is a must if the asteroids move.

i agree. I would even randomize the direction when they reenter the map.

scatter dice! good call. moving in a strait line off board and returning on other side is just like the video game. another fabulos idea.
