Question about placing obstacles, how many?

By rowdyoctopus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Couldn't find anything referencing this in the rules. I tried searching to forum, but honestly the search feature is not very good. I apologize if this has been asked before.

How many obstacles are placed in a game? I play home games and I am the only one in my play group with any game pieces. I own two core sets, so we have 2 sets of obstacles. Is there a set number that are supposed to be placed? Thus far we have only used one set at a time, but that decision was reached partly because we are still so new to the game and didn't want to make flying too difficult. I feel like the rules could be a little more specific regarding obstacles.

I never really noticed this before, but you are right. The rules on page 20 never really say how many obstacles to place, they merely give rules for placing them. I think from a practical perspective you can assume that there should be one set of asteroids (six) in a standard 3'x3' game. This does not mean you have to use all of them immediately - to introduce them gradually you could agree with your opponent on how many to place and follow the rules on page 20 to add them to the game. This may be a good way to start, since they do add a major new element to how you have to fly.

Having said that, the tournament rules are very specific in how asteroids must be used. In a nutshell, every tournament game must include exactly one full set of six asteroids, placed by each player alternately according to initiative. Even if you don't intend to play in a tournament, you should check these rules out to see how they are "officially" used.

A lot of people regard these obstacles as a real PITAsteroid sonreir , but learning how to fly with them will improve your game, and is necessary if you want to participate competitively.

Ah, I missed the link to the tournament rules. 6 it is then as I don't see a reason to clutter up our playing area more . Obviously we are not playing tournaments at home, but I feel the tournament rules add a bit of intent when you reach a grey area like this. Of course home games are always subject to home rules, but our default will be 6 going forward.

Thanks for the help.
