So, I've read the introductory material and the comic books, but I still don't know why the universe (and games) are called "dust". Does anyone know why? Beyond curiosity, this always gets me when I'm introducing the game to someone…
Where does the name come from?
Don't know, but as Dust is an alternative world we call Earth, and the words earth and dust are sort of related.

Yeah, but it doesn't relate to WWII, Mechs, alien technology…

Doesn't need to, its just te name of the world they are fighting on.
I believe the original concept was a world without fresh water, a world covered in "Dust". The original Dust Stratagy game map shows an Earth without any green a brown desert planet with murky oceans. But somewhere along the line Paolo moved away from the idea that everyone was fighting over water, and focused more on VK.
IIRC Battledroids, before it became BattleTech was about fighting over water.
Originally the background was in the 1950s, WW2 never ended and evolved into some kind of Cold War between the three great blocs. Earth was devastated and… "All is Dust"
