GM Screen Module from Player's Questions

By DontEatRawHagis, in Only War

This is a lot of hyperboly because I am forbidden from reading the Module. But my GM was telling me that the Module is impossible if done straight from the book.

I wanted to know how spot on is this?

We are a group of three and it seems every encounter we are giong up against Tanks and hordes of enemies. Sentinels with Autocannons nearly killed us all in one hit. The player had to spend a lot of fate points to dodge multiple shots.

He said that for some reason the Module says that players should go up against a squad of 8 guys for each member of the group. Seems like the only way we could eat through the enemy is if we had super rare weapons. Grenades seem next to useless, but then again I'm not too sure of the blast range.

Don't even get me started on the Chimeras. It seems like every encounter involves at least one of them and there is not a single weapon in our armaments that can penatrate that.

Are we playing the game right or is there something I'm missing?

Ive read the entire adventure and i can say, i think your GM misread some things, or he has a supreme faith in your groups ability to come up with creative tactics and may in fact think you guys are……Space Marines gunning down hordes of things with Heavy Bolter and Chainsword.

If he's running the game from the GM book you guys should be fine assuming you're not making absolutely terrible decisions or horribly underequiped.

The players goal is to reach the enemies encampment and kill/capture the enemy general. On the way you're supposed to have 2 mandatory encounters and it's possible to have optional encounters. Every couple days the GM is supposed to roll for an optional encounter off a chart(or pick one). You can then use stealth and other skills depending on the encounter to avoid it. Getting into fights raises the enemies alertness level and makes the enemies you do run into more numerous or have more equipment. The longer you go without fighting the lower the enemies alertness level.

The worst fight you should be in until the final encounter is 8 soldiers in a chimera escorted by a single sentinal with an autocannon. If you go 3 days in game without getting into a fight or using your vox the alert level goes down by 1.

The table the gm rolls on for random encounters looks like this

Table 1-4: Mission Complications
Roll Mission Complication Encountered
1-20 Infantry Patrol
21-40 Vehicle Patrol
41-55 Major Troop Movement
55-65 Pitched Battle
65-74 Lightning Storm
75-89 Air Support
90-100 Tribe-Caravan (if previously encountered, re-roll)

Edit: Re-read your post and your GM is doing it wrong for sure. "He said we should be encountering 8 guys per person in the group" This is wrong. As a group you're supposed to make a single stealth check to avoid the patrol, if you fail he rolls once on the table to see what happens. It seems like he's rolling 3 times or tripling the single roll he makes for some reason.

Infantry patrol is 6 guys or 10 if the alert level is at 1-2(out of 0-4). Vehicle Patrol is 8 dudes in a chimera or 8 in a chimera + 1 sentinal with autocannon. Major troop movement is basically ooo scary you guys see a company of soldiers go by and they chase you away. Pitched battle is you hear or see sounds of a major battle and just avoid it. Lightning storm is a skill check to avoid damage from the weather. Air support just raises the alert level and you run into an infantry patrol. Tribe caravan is you can use skills to make a good impression if your gm is running a long campaign set on the planet or score some combat bikes if you roll stupidly well, or just get food from them.

So no none of this 8 dudes for each of you crap.
