Verten Card player here…keep loosing while soloing the Hobbit quest. help?!

By Realik, in Strategy and deck-building

Thanks for any help :)

I have been playing CCG's for along time, Semi-pro MTG player, so i don't suck at card games….but i can't seem to beat even the first quest cycle of The Hobbit in this one.

I am playing the starter deck they reccomened (the one with Thorin). I try and build up 8 or so guys and stay under 35 Threat before the Trolls come out…but everytime once they do i just out right loose.

I would really appricate any tips!

What kind of card pool do you own? If you only have the core set and the hobbit expansions then the saga will be a lot more difficult. I never had much success running the recommended decks that are in the boxes.

Questing through the first quest card slowly (ideally until a troll camp is in play and you have several allies in play), saving baggins resources, and keeping your threat low definately seems to be the key to this quest.

Thanks for the responce.

I have the two hobbit starters, the main deck, and one other smaller pack (The Radaghast and rangers one)

So yeah i tried to be slow, but i find it hard to not commit too much to the quest..i send like 3 Influance over, they get 0-4 dark influance (sorry if that's the wrong term). So i end up getting too many advancement token, or i end up getting extra threat.

Not the greatest deck in the world I know, but your card pool is fairly limited and it is fun to use. I attempted We Must Away Ere Break of Day with this and won 2 out of 4 attempts fairly solidly (discovered the treasure on one of them too), so I know it's capable, even if it's not the greatest win-lose ratio.

Try to mulligan for cards that are either gonna keep the trolls at bay for longer (i.e. galadrim's greeting, gandalf, feint).

A few notes:

-Dwarven axe on gimli is a no brainer… let him defend an attack from a troll, take the 3 damage and when he gets the opportunity he will attack for 7 with just the 1 axe attached. Combine with a citadel plate if poss (and take more damage on Gimli ) or another axe to boost him further and you're laughing.

-Bofur - try and use his action to find the dwarven axe if you haven't drawn it.

-Gondorian Spearmen - work well in conjunction with Swift Strike, followed by an attack with Gimli (with 1 axe and 3 damage) you should get a total of 8 damage against the trolls. Stand Together works well with these too

-Horn of Gondor - play this on Eowyn if possible… one of the problems I found with this deck is that I always seemed to be holding too many Spirit cards.

-Unexpected Courage - play on Bilbo or Gimli depending on the situation you find yourself in

-Escort from Edoras - save these for when the trolls are in play.

One thing I can't stress enough for this quest is to SAVE RESOURCES while you can on the first stage and pray for a troll camp to appear. Being able to negate the sack deck to a degree is a real boon, especially if Unexpected Courage is on Bilbo. Also don't play a card just because you can afford it - there are some nasty treacheries on this quest that discard your attachments and damage all your allies so you really want to hold onto said card types until you really need them (i.e. when the trolls come into play), especially since escort from edoras and gondorian spearmen only have 1 HP. Ideally save your Test of Wills for these treacheries (and the More Like a Grocer treachery), but you only have 2 in the deck so you can't even rely on drawing them. It's much better and more satisfying to draw Wind-whipped Rain for it to have no effect because you played smartly and didn't play all your shiny attachments whilst on the 1st quest stage just because you could.

hope this helps a little… I would really recommend you purchase the Khazad-Dum expansion and the following Dwarrowdelf cycle if you want to do the whole saga with Dwarfs. I tried swapping out Eowyn for Nori and then Oin (obviously adjusting the deck a little), but getting enough dwarfs in play to make use of their effects is just too difficult with the cards available. have fun :)

The pleasure was all mine really… I'd forgotten how hard this game can be when you limit your card pool. The deck could do with tweaking still, to be fair.

I built another deck too… a lore-leadership deck that basically relies on you pounding through the second stage and sacrificing a lot of allies. Was fun to play and was winnable but hasn't got the slightest hope of killing trolls and finding the treasure
