First Aid question

By Bra'Kan, in WFRP Rules Questions

Here are a few questions I had about First aid:

1) Is a first aid check difficulty 1d for Slightly Wounded and 2d for Critically wounded?

2) When doing a first aid check, does the player first have to decide if it is to: a) Cure Wounds or b) temporarily ignore the effects of a critical wound?

Also:

3) does assisting a Resilience check by attempting a First Aid check require 8 hours of attention? If so, then does doing the First Aid check on yourself when trying a Resilience check take 16 hours in total?

And:

In the First Aid check explanation there is a caviate that says " If the First Aid check is successful, the target character recovers from a number of normal wounds equal to the number of successes generated, up to the target’s Toughness rating . "

However, this limit isn't specified in the section describing First Aid checks assisting resilience checks. Is it assumed or purposely removed?

Hi.

These would be my answers with my limited knowledge:

1) Yes and yes

2) Not entirely certain, it is probably the GM's decision, but I would say no - although you would probably know which you were rolling for before hand anyway.

3) I don't think it requires any such time payment. I believe you attempt the First Aid check first, then if successful, it will add white dice to your resilience check - 1 for each success and an extra one for 2 or more boons.

4) I don't believe the restriction is there, but as it is a resilience check, it is based on Toughness - so at a basic level the maximum wounds you could recover is your Toughness rating, then as you train in the skill or gain specialisms or white die, it would enable you to heal more wounds which sounds fair to me.

These are only my opinions and I'm sure others will have better info than me, sorry if these turn out to be misleading to you.

1) If on someone other than yourself, then yes and yes

2) No the player does not have to decide that ahead of time, it is an automatic side effect if they roll a successful check with boons

3) No it does not require any extended period of time like that

4) The restriction is removed for that check. The target's toughness rating does not make a difference when rolling to add White dice to someone's overnight Resilience check.

Regarding #2, the player's guide states:

To tend to someone’s wounds using First Aid, the character providing first aid must be engaged with his patient. The character then attempts a First Aid check. The difficulty for the check is based on the character’s injury level. If the First Aid check is successful, the target character recovers from a number of normal wounds equal to the number of successes generated (after accounting for challenge symbols), up to the target’s Toughness rating.

First Aid can also be used to temporarily ignore the effects of a critical wound. In this case, the First Aid check must generate a number of successes (after accounting for challenge symbols) equal to the critical wound’s severity rating. If the check succeeds, the listed status effect on the critical wound is ignored for the remainder of the day. Place a tracking token over the critical wound text to indicate it has been tended to by first aid. If the character has not recovered from that critical wound after a night’s rest, the token is removed and the effect is active once more.

Since both effects are activated with successes , I am not sure whether one check can activate both effects. I guess if there were enough successes, then maybe yes?

First Aid can also be used to …

I think that is the key; Either one effect or the other. The character has to state his intentions before rolling the dice. This is how we played it.
