X-Wing Game Night Kit Brief Review

By cleardave, in X-Wing

So last night I had the pleasure of taking home a set of plastic Target Lock tokens and an oversized pilot card as prize support from Heavy Support's X-Wing Game Night;

If you're not familiar with what the tokens look like, you can see them here;

Anyways, compared to the image FFG posted, the tokens are more red than the purple colour they look like. As well, the clarity of the plastic on the tokens is a little dark, so the white graphic with the Target Lock number doesn't really "pop" like it does in the image. However, the token is still easy enough to read from a distance, so both players shouldn't have a hard time telling which one belongs to which ship.

The token itself is a little more heavy than the cardboard ones we get with our ships. This makes them less likely to get jostled around and flipped over. Speaking of that, the numbers on these Target Lock tokens (#'s 1-5) are not printed with reversible sides, so even if your token somehow gets flipped over, it won't cause any confusion.

If you've ever had a huge dogpile of ships with Target Locks everywhere, you'll be glad for having these plastic numbered ones instead. It should definitely cut down on any accidents in the match, and eliminate any issues with players having a smaller collection having only the same lettered tokens.

Of course eventually we'll start meeting other players with plastic Target Locks, but then someone can go back to the cardboard for a match to keep them distinguished. You could also initial or paint the underside of the token if you wanted to make sure they didn't get mixed up with an opponent.

Overall, they're definitely useful to have, and I hope in a future Organized Play Season, FFG makes a 6-10 series.

As for the Pilot card, there's not much to say that you couldn't glean from the images. It measures at 6"x4" and feels like it's made from the same kind of card stock as the regular sized cards. I'm going to look for a sleeving solution for the card, probably around a photo lab or any other Wal-Mart type place that would have a really cheap slip cover for a picture, since the Pilot card is the same size as a standard photograph.

The extra real estate on the card gives you some room to put your upgrade cards, damage cards and shield tokens on it, so for those out there with limited table space, this card will take care of itself. If you're at a game night or tournament, you could even pile on all your other ship cards onto it to quickly shuffle around to another table if you need to get up.

Like the tokens, it would be nice if FFG introduced another Pilot card in a future season. Unlike the tokens, the oversized card has less practical value in your gameplay.

So in the end, the tokens and card are a nice prize to get. The store also provides a store credit prize based on dividing up the entry fees ($5), so on future events, I would more than likely pass off any potentially won tokens and cards off to another player. I think in the spirit of the game, I would imagine we won't hear stories of players making the rounds and hoarding batches of tokens and cards like the Kessel Run ships of last winter.

In the long run, I don't see this game night kit really being a big draw to inspire players to come out and compete for their contents as prizes over multiple events. It really comes off more as a cherry on the sundae for something more substantial like a store credit. I realize winning isn't everything, and we're all here to have fun, but I think the obstacle I'm hearing most is that, in the Toronto area at least, there are lots of people buying X-Wing, but nobody seems to be leaving their homes to play it. A more diverse prize package would be a nice draw.

If you've got a place that's more than willing and able to host an event, you may need to invest some time into coming up with your own prize support solution if you're planning on making it a regular event. My FLGS currently has it slated as a bi-weekly thing, and I can tell you that I'm just happy to potentially meet and play with new people, and am not so much interested in sweeping the events on the strength of having a dozen sets of 1-5 Target Locks.

I will certainly try and attend their other events for which I play, if only to collect a set of the equivalent tokens. To me, I find it ironic that the game that has the most interesting prize (Lord of the Rings) is the one with the most questionable tournament setup. The Rings Nightmare Decks are quite frankly amazing as a prize.

If I were running the event, I would do the Mirkwood scenario, giving the Nightmare Deck to the winner, and repeat for the other two quests over the next two events. For players motivated by prizes, you could easily get the drive to keep coming back to try and collect all three. This way, you could get more "top prize" value out of the kit and keep your players coming back to have another crack at it.

Anyways, those are my thoughts on the X-Wing kit and the Organized Play kits in general. I can't imagine what questions someone would have about the card/tokens, but if you do, I'll happily reply.

Excellent review. The only thing I would like to add is that the color of the tokens is not very consistent. I have 3 pairs, and one of them is very dark and cloudy. I think it gives them character, but it definitely appears to follow the same trend as their print-on-demand cards.

Thanks for that post. I live about a 20 minute drive away from that store. I'll definately try to make the next game night!
