Basic rule questions and interpitation

By kinnison, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game

Got my beginner box a few days ago and read through the rules. I have been credited as a playtester for other games (not any FF games) and feel confident of my ability to interpet rules.

  1. When performing a melee attack while engaged with an enemy, what is the difficulty of the roll? Easy? or is it opposed?
  2. For starship/vehicle combat. it says for speed 1 "One starship maneuver to move within close range of a target or object" it took me a while to realise that you can move relitive to the target but stay in close range.
  3. Can a ship at speed 1 move to Medium range?
  4. Can a ship at speed 2-4 move to Long range?
  5. Is there an Extreme range for ship combat?
  6. I also assume starship/vehicle combat gunnery difficulty is based on silouettes and not ranges.
  7. Can vehicles/ships attack or damage players not in vehicles/starships or vis versa?

I realise this is the beginner game and such questions could be answered in the core books.

Thanks for the game, looking forward to getting a group together to play this.

Starship combat isn't my area of expertise, (and I don't have my beta book handy anyway), so I can't answer those questions for you. Sorry.

That said, your first question is an easy one. The difficulty of a melee attack roll in the "engaged" range band is always Medium; two difficulty dice. (Beginner Game Rulebook, top of page 15.) The table on page 17 is only listing the difficulty for ranged attacks.

  1. Answered in previous post
  2. --
  3. Eventually yes, but not in 1 turn no if thats what you're asking. Speed 1 has to use 2 maneuvers to move 1 range band from close to short
  4. Eventually yes, but not in 1 turn. Speed 2-4 can only go from close to medium in 1 turn, which takes 2 manuevers. Going from medium-long takes 2 more maneuvers.
  5. Yes there is Extreme range
  6. All space gunnery has a base of 1 difficulty, modified by silouettes differences
  7. Yes. REMEMBER Silouettes still modifiy difficulty, so a big vehicle is still going to have a harder time hitting regular characters (silouette 1, unless small like jawa/ewok than 0). Vehicle weapons do x10 damage to characters. Vehicle armor is the same as x10 soak, so characters arent going to do much damage if any to armored vehicles unless they possess heavy/gunnery/explosive weapons like missile tubes

    1 armor = 10 soak
    1 breach = 10 pierce

Example. Chewie comenderes a AT-ST and shoots at Stormtroopers. Silouette 3 vs 1, difference of two so a difficulty of 3 (hard).
But an AT-ST shooting at Ewoks is even harder since they are half the size. Silouette 3 vs 0, difference of three, so difficulty of 4 (daunting).

Thanks for the replies.

So there is an extreme range for vehicle/starship combat, how do you get there?

might be better to have a chart of speeds, and how man manuvers it takes to get from one range to another, or is there one?

Lastly. Lets say the Death star (Silouette 10) wants to take out the Mellenium Falcon (silouette 4) with it's superlaser. it is a 6 siloutte Differance. Is this possible? Is four siloutte differance needed to make gunnery difficulty Formidible? What about 5 or 6 or more?
