Going to be picking this up soon, quick question for you all…

Hello pilots!

I've been reading up on this game for a few weeks now and I've decided to pick it up in the very near future. Quick question:

My gaming group is usually between 4-6 players. In addition to the ships that come with the base game, what other ships should I buy when I pick this up to make for a fun and balanced game when we play this?

really depends. if you follow the squad ules you should be fairly evenly matched. the trouble is that can be many different numbers of ships.

I would get another starter set. More cost effective than buying three expansions and a pack of dice.

Depends on time you have to game together but as a minimum for a group (ours is anywhere from 4 to 10 plus depending on the day) I would recommend 4 X-Wing against 6 Tie Fighters at the bare minimum. generally in a club match you want each player having at least two ships each. I have found most wargamers can handle a flight of three with little problem or slowing down the game.

As for the composition two core sets to start 2 X-Wing and 4 Tie, and I would one each of the expansions for the Tie and X wing. That give you the additional named pilots. After that I would go back to another core set. Then a Tie Advanced or Interceptor or regular Tie. and a extra X Wing.

Building on that another core set would give you options. YMMV

I play regularly with three to four other people and we each can handle about 150 points (two are teen age gamers) we do use a larger area and make an evening or afternoon of the game.

It depends on how you want to play really. TIE Fighters and X-Wings are never bad choices for the game, just keep in mind that balance is roughly 2 TIEs to 1 X-Wing.

The TIE Advanced and Y-Wing give you support ships which aren't that exciting to play, unless you want Darth Vader or you really love Y-Wings.

The TIE Interceptor and A-Wing are a lot of fun and are very quirky ships. Just be warned that they may die before you expect them to since their health isn't comperable to the other things they can do.

The Big Ships are also support ships, don't expect them to wade into battle and killing everything. Either you tank with the falcon (that is, absorb damage and protect your teammates while giving supporting fire) or snipe with the Firespray (avoid combat but use your fantastic arsenal to help your team).

So, again, just depends on how you want to expand your game. X-Wings and TIEs are always useful but for a different experience, invest in some of the other fighters.
