Monster combat questions

By Octoparrot, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Do Horror checks occur before or after damage from a failed Evade at the outset of an initial encounter? If you fail to evade a nightgaunt, does he just fling you through the gate, or do you also have to make a horror check? Intuitively, it seems sensible that you'd still have to make the horror check.

If I try to evade the dunwich horror, do I draw the card that determines his abilities before or after I make the roll? More tension, obviously, if you don't know what kind of abilities he has unless he does combat damage to you for the first time. This does also raise a question about timing alluded to above: if the Horror check should be made before or after the automatic combat damage for failing the initial Evade, because you might lose or spend items, etc. from combat damage that could have been useful vs the Horror check.

If you fail an evade check, the combat damage is assessed first. Then you must do the horror check. If you survive after that, then y9ou can attempt to flee or fight again.

As soon as you move into the space with the DH, you draw the card. So you don't know before you enter his space, but you will know whether to flee or fight. And with any monster, you can attempt to cast a Combat spell first and if it fails, then choose to run.

I don't think so--you draw the Dunwich Horror stats card before you make the Horror check, so you have to have decided to enter combat or have failed the evade check without knowing its stats. What does this mean for if you fail the evade check against the Horror? Does he do no combat damage because you haven't been set up for the horror check, and then you enter combat and draw the card?

You're right, its right on the monster chit.

Before making a Horror check against the Dunwich Horror, draw a Dunwich Horror card to determine its attributes.

Brian, see, this is what happens when you "cheat" on AH with say, BSG gran_risa.gif ! I noticed you had posted a session report of BSG on BGG.

Go acronyms gui%C3%B1o.gif !

LOL. No, it's what happens when I think my memory is better than it really is.

BTW, you really should try BSG. It's an awesome game! Some similarities to AH but quite an experience! TTFN! gran_risa.gif

It sounds cool, but really would need (from what I've read) 4+ players. I'm pretty much at max with 2-p sad.gif . Also, with Age of Conan coming out (hopefully this month) and me looking into Lord the Rings TBG, bank account wouldn't like it.

Obviously the game would be more fun with more players. But my wife and I played this the otehr night with just the two of us and we had a blast. Official 2-player rules are up on the site. You can read my session report to get a feel for the game:
