Toronto Area Players
Or you could just say every other Wednesday evening there is casual play at Heavy Support in south Etobicoke starting at 6:30. How many players do you usually have turn up? Do you guys ever hold weekend tournaments? I assume this is free of charge.
I'll let my group know. http://www.facebook.com/groups/6738327518/ .
You should join, if you haven't already.
I was typing that in from my phone, and it does not like FFG's forums, so I had to keep it brief.
From what I gather, the 6th was their first night for it. I had missed it myself so I can't speak to the turnout. This Wednesday, the 20th, will be the next one according to the calendar. 6:30 start time, $5 entry, and it looks like prize support comes back in the form of store credit from the entry fees.
It looks like Wednesday nights are their FFG night, as they are apparently also running Star Wars LCG, Thrones, Rings, and Netrunner on a cycle too.
I would join your group if I used Facebook, and I have yet to be dragged kicking and screaming into the world.
Interesting, thanks for the response. Keep us posted as to turn out in future. I don't understand the $5 fee, or prizes as two and a half hours is not long enough to hold more than 2 rounds at the most. Is it league play or something? Is there a special format that they play or is it standard 100 pts?
I've also posted this over on the A Few Maneuvers Event Board.
Ok, so I found a bit more info on the website under the event listing, but I'm still baffled how they can hold 3 1 hour rounds in 2 and half hours.
Rebel against intergalactic tyranny, or fight with the might of the Empire at your back in our Star Wars X-Wing tournament! The tournament with be held every other week on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm. Entry is $5, all of which goes in the prize-pool, for three 1-hour rounds. The prizing will be an even split in store credit for any one who wins at least 2/3 rounds. Squads must be built to 100 points and army lists must be presented when requested, and built to the FFG tournament standards found here: http://www.fant asyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/support/faq/2013-Feb/X-Wing_TournamentRules_V1.2_web.pdf
I'm sure they would keep the store open a little later to accomodate the extra rounds. They close at 9:00pm, and I'm sure the 6:30 start time is to allow for people that work during the day to have enough time to make it there after they're done their shift.
I went to a Kessel Run there back in December, and they didn't rush anyone out the door at the end. They allowed everyone to collect their stuff and shuffle out in a timely fashion. The $5 fee, as I understand it, is to build up a prize pot, which would be distributed to anyone that won 2/3 of the matches in form of a store credit. I think they may also have the game night kits as well. Store credit is pretty handy, as it allows you to expand your collection of X-Wing ships, or if you're all full on those, some other game you're into, at a healthy discount to your personal cost.
I like that idea, personally, as it allows the individual to draw more utility out of the event's if they are attended regularly. The oversized pilot cards are neat, but how many of those do you really need to win? If you were just crushing it there every two weeks, you'd probably have your fill of acrylic Target Locks and mondo sized Pilot cards. Buy some ships if you need them, fill up on game supplies or maybe even use the prize credit to try out a game you might not have otherwise wanted to invest money in.
So Dave, what did you think?
There was just the two of us, so we played a best of 3 set. It may not sound exciting, but it came down to the third match, with a TIE Interceptor and a Y-Wing each with one hull point left to work with. I got to play with a new opponent, so mission accomplished. Hopefully others will join. Feel free to add it to your Facebook group to spread the good word.
They're running a game night every Wednesday, rotating Thrones, Rings, Netrunner, and Star Wars, with X-Wing landing on alternating Wednesdays, so it's definitely "FFG Night" in there on Wednesdays, or so we'd all like it to be.
Yeah, Yik is from our group but it is a bit far for him so he may not make it too often. Another member of our group, Mike, lives about 5 minutes away, but has been decidely on the fence for the last year about X-Wing, mostly leaning toward the nay side. I even brought the game out to teach him, but it failed to turn him. Surprisingly, this game night announcement has prompted him to reconsider giving it another chance and he said he may show up, even though he doesn't own any ships and only has the slightest understanding of the game. So hopefully Dave you bring enough ships with you that you can lend him a squad if he shows up one night. Please be patient and go slow teaching him the game. He doesn't mind losing on a regular basis as long he is having fun doing it.
I brought extra stuff out last week for that very reason. It's a good idea for everyone in general if they're showing up to something like that if they can bring some loaner materials for a player. It's nice to give someone that experience to try before they buy, as there isn't exactly a game rental place where you could take home a copy of X-Wing to mess around with for a couple of days.
I don't mind teaching the game at all. I had a couple of friends come over last weekend and they wanted to see how it played, so i ran a quick demo with them doing everything while i referee'd it, then gave them each a 100pt list and let them go for it.
Fellas Fellas!
I decided to drive by Heavy Support Games today to see what the turn out would be like and buy an X-Wing and an A-Wing to paint up. Guess what? The store had two people in it looking at Magic the Gathering cards…
I was really hoping to try out my 4 zippy little A-Wings in a game for the first time. Oh well.
To be fair, the weather must have played a factor as finally father winter has decided to leave us alone.
On a side note, they had one Millenium Falcon for sale and no other expansions at all. Restock was going to be in September? Couldn't believe what I was hearing. Are we all sold out in the GTA?
Staff was really nice and they had lots of gaming tables. Looked like a great place to have some games.
Too bad the Heavy Support game night is not going on anymore. On the plus side there is a tournament today at Black Knight Games in Hamilton and all are welcome to attend.
I was at the first of hopefully many friday night x-wing gaming nights held at the dueling grounds. It was a lot of fun. Anyone in the GTA should try to make it.
