Impatiently waiting

By Red 55, in X-Wing

Hi all,

Recently ordered the core set and all Wave 1 expansions and can't wait to start playing. I should have my order in a few more days. What's even better is that my 7 year old son can't wait to play either! I've been pouring thru the boards digesting as much possible. This looks like a great resource, and a helpful community.

Are there any other suggestions for a new player, before I dive in?

Thanks!!

Welcome to the game! You and your son are gonna have a blast, I'll tell ya. How many Expansions are you planning to get initially? How many do think you want to end up with? One thing, Since you're only getting one Core Set (yes?), I would, at least, get a Dice Pack. That way you have enough dice to play with. The Core Set only comes with three Attack dice and three Defense dice. In certain situations you might need at least four or five dice. If, after you guys have played a few games, you might want to get another Core Set mainly for the "extras" -- tokens, templates, and dice you'll get.

Are you planning to get Wave 2, that hit game stores within the past couple weeks in this purchase? Aside from the Wave 2 ships, it has NEW upgrades that can be used with the First Wave of ships.

Again, welcome to the game. And have a great time

Yes I have 1 core set on the way, along with 1 each of the Wave 1 expansions for starters. If we really get into the game a 2nd core set will follow. I was thinking of getting the Dice App if the need of extra dice becomes an issue before I do get a 2nd core set. Once we get a few games under out belts I'll have a better idea just how many expansions will make their way to our house. Thanks for the pointers.

Take it for what it's worth, but me personally? I wouldn't use the quickstart rules- just go straight to the actual ruleset.

The Action phase is something I feel like really makes the game interesting. As the quickstart rules omit that, I found the first few times I played (under the quickstart rules) to be kinda tedious, to be completely honest. I had my first core for about a month before I ever played it with the for reals rules because my wife and I had just had our second kid, and I just had had not had time to read the full rules. I played quickstart three or four times with a buddy from work on lunch hours. Neither of us were hyped up about it, really.

Then I found out some folks at my FLGS were playing and I managed to sneak out of the house on a Sunday and played my first full rules game. Totally different experience! Went from fair to awesome in my book very quickly.

If you do use the quickstart rules, I'd suggest tightening up the size of the play area a bit. A 2' x 2' space for three ships that can't Focus is going to lead to a lot of flying around and not much blowing stuff up. I realize they made it big to help keep people from running off the board with the (likely completely new to them) maneuvering mechanic, but holy mackerel.
