Death by Payne

Type: Event House: Lannister
Cost:
Game Text:

House Lannister only.
Response: After a character triggers its character ability, kneel Ser Ilyn Payne or a Noble to kill that character.

Does this effectively cancel whatever the character was doing, because they die?

-nihil

No, you have to specifically cancel the triggered ability in order to stop its effect. Killing the character does not stop anything (it's only a sort of "revenge" you take on your opponent).

No. The response will still go off Dying doesn't act as a cancel at all.

In this case

Ability is triggered
(Save/Cancel Responses)
Ability is resolved
Passive abilities triggered by said ability and its resolution are triggered
Responses to said ability are triggered (Death By Payne)

To illustrate the situation, let's say you just won a military challenge with Robb Stark, and the Lanni player has a Lannisport Weaponsmith which he chooses for claim, and a Cersei Lannister (core). You trigger Robb in response to winning the challenge with him participating, and choose to kill Cersei Lannister. She certainly won't go down without a fight, and in response to that character ability, the Lannister player plays Death by Payne, kneeling Cersei (who is moribund) to kill Robb. Nobody else has any responses, so as the action window closes the Weaponsmith, Cersei and Robb all hit the dead pile.
