Playing Remotely? Try Hangout EotE tools

By Spew, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Thank you! This saved the game I ran today! Nothing else was working, so we were about to wing it with regular roll20 dice, while translating the results. That would've been a nightmare. This script worked like a charm, though Roll20 itself kept losing connection. Once the dice roller tool is updated, I think I'll keep both options on hand, just in case.

No problem. It has changed the game a ton for us. The new character sheet that works with it is amazing.

I reworked the character sheet a bit for my group, added a spot for Morality and Duty and the player story. I am thinking of adding a section for player notes as well just because my Players want it. (it is really easy to edit if you know what to look for).

Any updates on the fix?

agreed, its not working right now

I just upgraded my account to Mentor to try this API thing that works with the in game character sheet out over lunch, and I will say it is simply amazing.

I cant do it.. Roll20 is a scam in my book. Everyone writes scripts free scripts for their games, posts them there .. then they charge you to use by having to upgrade your membership to Mentor.

The scripts need back end server processes. And for most people they give you access to most of the stuff for free. And here you are whining about them having a way to pay for those server costs.

I should have been more clear. The part IMHO i dont like is having to upgrade your membership to the MAXIMUM Membership amount to have access to ANY Script functionality. Apologies for going off topic. Full disclosure, I still play roll20 games as a player, but i wont buy into their subscription plan.

That's all ill say about it, back to the important issue of getting the Hangout DIce roller app working.

a bit off topic complaints about a service that costs 5 bucks a month and provides a wealth of resources to people who cant meet in person should make their own thread.

Preferably not in the FFG eote forum where there is little to no impact.

How is Roll20, or the EotE hangout tools off topic? It is a way to play the FFG product. Which I assume they would want.

It was about a poster talking how roll20 was useless unless you subscribe which is not true.

Me and my group have been using Roll20 for about 2 years... most of this time none of us Played anything for it. YES ZERO.

About a year ago I decided I wanted to use the lighting features which are kind of cool and wanted to have more storage. I also met a couple of the guys who run it and they are pretty cool guys. They are not really making much money making this. They still have day jobs, they just created it because they hated all the existing tools available, so they created this in their spare time. This company is literally made up of a handful of people. Supporting this felt like something I was interested in, so I got the basic membership.

Just recently I decided to try out this sheet that requires the scripting to work and upgraded to the $10 package. I will see over time if I keep this or go back to the $5 one.

As for ripoff I think that is unfair. They made this tool to work with normal systems like d20. Over time they started getting more and more requests to try to support more and more crazy systems like EotE and Warhammer, etc.

To handle this, they opened up somethings and added it to the mentor level where the community could self develop things wanted. This allowed them to have a number of systems start to be community supported that they had no ability to do in the framework of their small parttime setup. This mentor level also was a way they could assist people directly who are trying to get something to work, and they would get custom help because they were a higher subscriber. I guess I should explain that mentor level allows you to get assistance from the Devs directly.

In anycase, Roll20 is completely usable for free. even if you just have to have people roll dice on cam etc.

5 dollars a month for 6 people to play RPGs as much as they want online with their friends whom they cannot see in person is a scam in your book? Get real.

EotE Google Hangouts Dice roller is working again apparently.

Thanks TommyC.

It's only $5 a month? Hell I pay $15 for WoW. I think $5 is more than reasonable. I cant believe sumone is complaining about $5 a month.

I've used Roll20 for close to 2 years now. Have not paid a dime. It's a great tool.

Ok,

Against my better judgement i will try to explain,

Apparently no one except BrashFink actually understood my gripe.

Every one simply saw ...Scam, R20.. and knee-jerk replied without thought or comprehension.

So let me break it down.

The original discussion in this thread was about The EOE tool and an alternative the R20 EOE Script.

A user replied that he upgraded to MENTOR level to use the script. MENTOR level is not 5 dollars a month, its $10.

My gripe was with regards to a paying customer at Support level($5 a month), STILL does not have access to ANY Scripts. I purchased a 1 month subscription of supporter level in order to learn the tool and use the EOE die script. TO my dismay i still had no access to it after paying. ONLY by paying the maximum membership subscription do you get access to run ANY scripts.

THUS in my book, for $10 a month to run 1 script was not a viable solution in my opinion.

As i said above, I use R20 as a player not a GM but i wanted to make the leap to GM for a EOE game. The Cost Leap from SUPPORTER level to MENTOR level was prohibitive.

That's my grip and complaint.

SO to every one who is still under he impression that my gripe was about base supporting , that's not it, your missing the entire point of the discussion. IT is access to SCRIPTS in r20 and the only way is by paying the MAXIMUM subscription of mentor.

PS: thanks to BrashFink , i kind of understand it better now but in my case don't care about dev access and the benefits of Mentor. I simply want to run 1 script. R20 structure is not set up that way so its my loss.

Does anyone know who is maintaining the script for google+ hangouts, and if the code is available for modification?

As a GM, I love the tool but there are a few features I prefer for my style of game.

I would like to be able to set the dice pool for a player. It slows down the pace of the game to have to tell a player what the difficulty is and then it gets more bogged down with getting into increases vs upgrades and adding/removing setback/boost die.

The second feature is the ability to add advantage and threats before rolling the dice. Some of the newer talents and gear add an automatic advantage, or threat, before rolling the dice pool.

No worries, glad to help. Fair enough on your reasons. I think there is another reason they may do this that I just realized.

If they give basic level access to the scripts, there is going to have to be someone to assist answer questions, etc. If they did not, people would complain "oh I pay $5 a month, no one helps, no one answers questions.." I really do not know what their numbers are, but I am pretty sure there are several times the amount of basic member to mentor level. I think they felt if someone wants to double their contribution, we can justify actually having someone assist them, and it keeps it at a level of help that is maintainable.

They also could worry that someone may accidentally wreck their campaign with a script, then no one assists, then they make someone angry and loose a customer.

I don't think I ever expressed this, but thank you to the person who made this. Without this app, my Star Wars games wouldn't be possible.

This app is indeed awesome, and many thanks to TommyC and whoever else was involved in creating it.

However, it doesn't seem that further development on it is being done (understandable, as people have lives). I had a couple features I wanted added to it, so I went ahead and created my own dice roller, very much modelled on this one.

I've been using the new dice roller quite happily with my online group for some months now.

The main features I've added relative to the original roller:

  1. It will always show you the results of each specific die, as well as the combined result. This is nice for people who like to narrate what results came from what sources.
  2. You have the option of automatically clearing the dice after each roll. This prevents the common issue of getting extra left-over dice on your next roll.
  3. You can roll "normal" dice other than percentiles. For example, d10 for Morality or if you do things like roll d4 to see which PC is targeted.

You get can the roller by clicking the button on this page:

https://eote-hangouts-dice-roller-release.googlecode.com/git/hangout-button.html

Let me know what you think. I'm open to feature requests, but no guarantees about what I will/won't add or on what timeframe.

Oh wow.. Ilike!..

Just tested the new roller..

Any chance to add a little polish to the Dice chooser Graphics? Simply an aesthetic request. Functionality is good.

As we use it where should we send feature requests and bug reports?

Oh, good question. Email [email protected] with requests/bug reports.

What kind of polish are you thinking? I was going for a flat/simple look originally.
