Playing Remotely? Try Hangout EotE tools

By Spew, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

How do you remove the lower bar in Google Hangouts? It's bloody annoying only seeing Roll20 in 1/2 of the screen, what with all the extra bars everywhere (top bar, left sidebar, EotE Dice bar on the right, and then a huge lower bar to show participants; which are already shown in the Roll20 window - all these bars are superfluous, needless and in the way).

Ideally, I'd like to remove all of them, and only keep the Roll20 window and the dice roller, so it's not even evident we're using Google.

Edit: Nevermind, I set up custom dice with the Table Roller in Roll20 instead, so it actually displays all the different dices when I roll, just like what would happen if we were playing IRL; I actually like this functionality *better* than the Google+ one, because this way it displays all the individual die, instead of just throwing the end results at us.

Do you have to be a subscriber to roll 20 to use that ?

No.

What you do is that you set up a rollable table, and replace the roll options with images of the dies.

I've since made an even better system, in which you create tokens from the tables, and then roll them on the board. :)

Requires Mentor, though.

Can you please walk me through how you do this tables and tokens stuff? Also, where are you getting the dice images?

Thanks bro!

I made the images myself, feel free to grab them here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1yLliRCIzfoT3BGYkx5M1J2VU0&usp=sharing

For some of the dies, there's two sets; one in white and one in black. Use the white ones when available, because otherwise it gets a bit hard to see what the results are.

Either way, what you do is that you go into Roll20 as a GM (or Co-GM) and you open the tab for Decks and Rollable Tables. Then you create one Table for each dice; let's name them Ability, Difficulty, Boost, Setback, Proficiency, Challenge, Force (and if I forgot any, it's because I'm tired as all hell; either way, you get the point).

Then for each table, you create a number of possible results equal to the number of die results, so, 8 for Ability & Difficulty, 6 for Boost and Setback, and so on. Then for each possible result, you name it appropriately and upload the appropriate image. It'll make sense when you get working on it.

Let's say that we just created a Rollable Table called Ability, and 8 different results, each represented by one of the faces of the Ability die. You can now make rolls on the table by writing /r 1t[Ability] or /r 3t[Ability] and so on. When you've set up the Difficulty Rollable Table, you can do /r 1t[Difficulty] , and so forth.

However, this is the neat part; You can make each Rollable Table into a Token, by pressing the "Token" button next to the Rollable Table (in the Decks and Rollable Tables tab) that you just created.

You can then select these tokens on the board, and right-click them, and choose Multi-Sided->Random Side . Select multiple dies by holding down CTRL when selecting dies, to make yourself a dice-pool, right-click, Multi-Sided->Random Side, to roll everything at once.

Works like a charm.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I shall tell tales of your greatness.

Could you expand on how you are using those token dices in game? I've tried your method, and while I am able to create the token dices, I need to have them displayed on the map. Players can then CTRL-C/CTRL-V to copy them x many times as they need (effectively "grabbing" the dices) and then roll them. It however mean each player need his own stack of tokens if you want simultaneous rolls. Then, if there is a need to shift to a different map (page in Roll20), all tokens need to be copied.

So basically, I am unsure on how to make it user friendly and I am curious how you use them.

Edit: Ok, I found out that a player can click X amount of times on "token" in the table, to generate that token X times. Then, the player can grab all tokens at once and roll them. It is more user friendly, but the risk is obviously not being to see how many times you click on the "ability" token.

Thank you very much, friend. This is just amazing!

This is great!

One (probably really dumb) question. Would it be possible to add this as a widget to simple website?

I play with a small group that can never have the same free time and we've started adapting a play by mail system. I made a rollable table on Roll20 so they can come and go as its their turn, but having access to this on like a google site where we could easily track the destiny would be amazing.

I'm sure the answer is "it just doesn't work that", but I had to ask.

Hm... There are also other EotE dice rollers out there that you might be able to use... You could just roll, take a screen pic (by hitting the print or printscreen key), and then email it.

Not a bad idea, and likely the route we'll end up taking.

Any other rollers you would recommend I look at though. I'm attempting to bring as much of the resources we need under one location.

Sadly, it doesn't have Destiny Points, but it's good enough if you track that separately.

I probably still asking all the wrong questions, but is there a way to use either roller within a website?

I like the hangout tool. Just wish it would not lose connection so often. You'll be playing along make a roll and no one else will see it so you will have to shut it down and redownload it to reconnect. then you have to repush the destiny pool to everyone. Does anyone know who the programmer for it is?

I just found out in my last session that you can click on each die to zero them out (I missed that info earlier in the thread), but I still wish the Hangout EotE dice roller had a single All Clear button. Regardless, this tool has been extremely helpful for online gaming. Thanks, TommyC!

Is TommyC the programmer? I would love to give the programmer some feedback as it is an awesome tool. But I do have a couple problems i would love to see a way to fix. Namely a way to force a reconnect between the clients so they are resynched.

Sir, my most sincere thanks!

Just played Under the Black Sun with 3 new players using roll20 and your tool and everything was excelent!

Thank you very much!

I'd like to join in a game on hangout but I dont know who is playing or when.

Announcements are often posted on /r/swrpg on reddit and the FFG swrpg google+ page. I run an open online campaign for people who can't commit to set dates or times. Sat is the next game (info in my sig). It's currently full, but last minute conflicts usually open up a few slots.

Anyone else having trouble with the EotE hangouts dice roller? I've never had an issue with it opening before today, but now if just attempts to load, then fails.

I had the same problem when my group was trying to load it last night. None of us could get the roller to open.

What did you use as an alternative?

I thought it was just me having that issue with it hanging.

Turns out that Google Hangouts had an update this week which broke functionality for the dice roller :( .

Is some one Trying to Fix it? or is this it for the APP?

I will work on getting the hangout tool working this week.

I will also open source it in case someone wants to contribute.

Stay tuned.

Would it be possible to request a button to resync the tool. sometimes it loses sync and you have to close it and reopen it to get it reconnected with the rest of the group.

Thank you! This saved the game I ran today! Nothing else was working, so we were about to wing it with regular roll20 dice, while translating the results. That would've been a nightmare. This script worked like a charm, though Roll20 itself kept losing connection. Once the dice roller tool is updated, I think I'll keep both options on hand, just in case.
